bring or rent carseats??

We are going to the caribbean in feb. We are renting a car. The seats, to rent, are $4 a day so it's $80 for the trip. I have 2 Marathons for the boys. If I were to bring them I need bags... $50 for them. do I bring the seats since i am assured of the quality and cleanliness and save $30 or do i leave them home since it will be 2 more things to transport with 4 bags, 1 stroller, golf clubs and 3 kids?

I would rent them. Less to schelp. And you probably won't be driving around that much. At least I hope not - you should be at the beach! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would bring them....

as an idea, can you ship the clubs and/or stroller to the hotel so it's there for you when you arrive, but you don't have to haul it with you?

Might be a few extra $$ but it's your own clean stuff and might be less frustrating for you

I wish I could ship them. I need them to drive the kids around.

Re: bring or rent carseats??

Honestly, I would bring them.... I rented a car seat once for Nate when we went to NY and it was questionable. I had to cut up a receiving blanket over the entire seat. Chat Icon

We were in NY this week and we brought our seats instead of renting. It's a PITA to carry two car seats but rented seats are not sanitary.

I'd bring them. ESPECIALLY if you are not going to be in the US. My SIL rented one last year for her 1 year old and it was WAY too big for my neice and SIL had to go find a Wal-Mart and buy a new seat for her (luckily, she was in Florida visiting MIL, so MIL just kept it).

I would bring them as well. We rented when we went to Florida and it was a disaster. Besides being pricey....I think it was $100 for 2 of them (and i got a twins discount)....they car rental agencies don't put them in for you and they were not the best car seats.

My DH was trying to put in two crappy car seats he never saw before in the sweltering heat with no instructions. Plus we never felt comfortable that the seats were in the right way.

While the two car seats can be bulky and a pain to bring, I think the next time I am going to get those little handles that go on the car seats so you can tote them around the airport (with or without your child in it) like a suitcase. I never want to go through what we did the last time.

Also, just so you know car rental agencies will not put in the carseats for you for insurance purposes. At least that is what we were told.

Re: bring or rent carseats??

I was afraid of those responsesChat Icon I guess I am going to get the travel bags for the seats. I would like the roller things but I am also bringing a sling for the baby to carry him in as well as the umbrella stroller. I don't have a seat for the baby on the plane so I would be checking the seats anyway. We have a few extra adults to keep an eye on the other 2 so I guess Im good.

Re: bring or rent carseats??

Just some info- we went to florida last year and bought a $5 laundry bag at the laundromat for dd's car seat.

It worked great. We bought it n a bright color so we could find it easily at baggage claim.

Laundry bag eh?? I like the sound of $5 instead of $35!!!! What seat do you have? That is the issue I am running into, the marathons are so big!

We have the roundabout, but the bag is pretty big.
Also- they told us at the airport we didn't need a bag, they put it in plastic anyway.

Re: bring or rent carseats??

Ive flown Southwest with the car seats and didnt have bags for them. They actually put them in garbage bags in ISP for us. But when we were in Orlando they didn't do the same favor for us and we checked them as is... never want to do that again!! I want to have them in a bag. Any specific place you got the laundry bags??

ETA: We are flying an international airline so I don't know if that makes a difference on how they package things.

We flew southwest out of Islip and when they put it in the plastic bag I got the impression it was a security thing- I don't know.
We got the laudry bags at a local laundromat, you could probably get them anywhere, but I would be happy to give you the exact place if you want.
