I have a friend named Xiomara

Is it pronounced Sha - mara?

More like Sio-mara

I know at least 2 Xiomaras. Not that uncommon among Latinos.

ETA:

I know a couple who named their son Jomar (her name is Mary and his is Jose)

I know an Anicely and a Miciely (no relation Chat Icon)

Also, one my friends named her daughter Micaela waaaay before Mikayla became so popular (pronounced almost the same) and everyone thought she was nuts. Now there are Mikaylas everywhere.

Not doubting anybodies stories, but some of these names sound a bit like Urban Legends.

Anyone else think that?????

Well, while Female isn't in the top 1,000 names in the past 50 years, Male is: In 1994, it was the 966th most popular name in the countr; in 1993, the 958th most popular, in 1991, the 683rd most popular, and in 1990, the 701st most popular... according to the SS web site.

I knew a Rhiannon. But she went by Barbie instead. I always thought Rhiannon was a much prettier name.

A cousin named her son Sorin - after the founder of Notre Dame. Her and her DH graduated from there.

My name is common but spelled very differently and I like it that way. I've seen people roll their eyes though --as if my parents didn't know how to spell. Chat Icon I would definitely give my children "different" names or different spellings.

I went to HS with a guy named Sorin and he was HOT!

There was also a guy named Afolabe but I think I remember him being of African royal decent.

I bet there is another board like this somewhere in the world and some posters are debating how RIDICULOUS the name Rachel is.

I was in the mall a few months ago and a woman was yelling for her son and daughter:

Zinfindel (the boy)
Merlot (the girl, but instead of saying Merl-o, she pronounced it Merl-ot)

Seriously. He was Vietnamese and it obviously doesn't mean the same thing there but, he was one of the most well known people on campus (who barely said a word).

I worked for a Japanese company where the last name Fuk (pronounced as if it had 4 letters) was very popular. "Good morning, Mr. Fuk." "How are you today, Mr. Fuk." You heard it a lot. (Very formal company...)

These are all kids I grew up with. Most of them are Irish names:
Oisín
Ailbhe (Alva)
Eabha (Eva)
Cliona
Tadgh
Aonghus
Finbar
Eamonn
Grainne (means ugly!)
Mavourneen (means my love). I think that’s the most unique.

I also know these:
Aquinas
Salome
Isolde
Thaddeus (my Dad’s middle name)

I think Cavan can be a first name as well as it being a county in Ireland. It means grassy hill.

DH had an Aksh!t in his class too.

alot of these names are common in their "original" countries. except for the ones people just made up.

I played soccer with a girl named A'lice.

no not Alice. It was pronounced "A-Leekie"

I also worked with a girl who's name was Immaculata (after her grandmother), but she liked to be called Maci (Mack-lee). I thought that was pretty.

My aunt was going to name one of my cousins Malley (her maiden name) but she didnt. But we all liked that name!

eta: and I also know a Siobhan. Thats a common irish name.

DH's friend is a teacher and his student was named Female (pronounced Fe-mal-A). Her mother did not speak English when she was born and thought that the hospital named her when they put Female and then her last name on her crib. So she kept it Female and this is this girls name. Her brother is Male (mal-A). You cannot make this stuff up.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I find other peoples stupidity quite amusing.

Some of the weirdest names I've come across are: Princess, Born Reality, Eternity, Baby, and Chen Chen (first and last name were the same!) Chat Icon
