I'm not talking to a friend or family member, but to a stranger that needed it and also while you were still alive.

I don't know about while I was alive. I guess it would depend on the organ and how risky the operation was. Especially if it were a stranger. I don't mean to sound selfish, but I'm not ready to leave my kids yet.
My DH and my mom both know that I want as much donated as possible when I do go. I'd rather that they helped someone out than just literally rotted away.

Friend/Family member- I would rip the organ out myself! Without a doubt yes. I was going to given my aunt a kidney but she is 85 and the doctors are not certain she would survive the surgery.
Stranger-I've actually thought about this. I say no ONLY bc I am fearful that in the future a friend or family member might be in need and I already donated the needed organ.
Maybe I'm crazy!?

For a stranger - it would depend on what organ it was, what type of operation I would go through, etc.
I'm on the bone marrow donor registry, which can be pretty painful from what I understand. When you're taking organs, I only have a few that could be taken & still be alive - and I'm rather attached to them.

Family, yes, to a point. Stranger, no, not while I'm alive. I have too many health issues to risk giving up an organ while I'm alive.

my mom recently recieved a double lung transplant, and its so amazing what donating your organs can do.. she was about to die, and another patient in the same hospital got the donors heart, and some of his other organs went to other patients in other hospitals. So i have to say I would def. donate once I'm gone (although technically you can't be dead to donate they have to keep you alive to take the organs) but I would only donate an organ to a family or really close friend... not to a stranger. But then again if it was a baby and my life wasn't go to be much different maybe I would consider it.
Stories like that are what make being a potential donor completly worthwhile!

JUST FYI - signing the back of your license means nothing anymore! You have to get on the organ donor registry.
