it can't be wrong - your answer is always going to be a multiple of 9 - if it's not, you added/subtracted wrong
Yep-9 is a magical number. Even when the symbols are switched, the multiples of 9 will all have the same symbol.

This was fun! I showed it to my class of my 11th grade AP students, and after only 5 minutes, they had it figured out (b/c I couldn't!). (PS. - they are AP history students - not math so I am pretty impressed!)
