Upset with Dr.-Long

I am giving some back information....My DS was two years old last week. I was originally due the day after Thanksgiving so from about September on my Dr. was talking C-section. He said the baby was transverse then breech and it just seemed like everytime there was a different story. I went in there one day with my DH and asked if I could not have the c-section and he said no because of the size of the baby and I could be putting the baby at risk for shoulder dysplasia, etc. After hearing that I was worried and would never want to put my child in danger. One time I had to go to L&D and there was a high risk doc there and he said he saw no reason why I needed a c-section. I still went along with what my doc said because I was schedule for the week later. I still think that I really didn't need the c-section, my son was 8lb 14 oz

Fast forward to this pregnancy. I am due in March and all along in my mind I have wanted a VBAC. Today at my appointment I planned on talking with my doc about my thoughts. He said to me first, we are going to have to schedule your c-section. I said do I have to have one. He said yes since you had one and your son was on the big side and I am sure this one will be big too. He said back in the day many more doctors did VBACs because if a baby was breech and the mother had a section then she would not need another section. I am so upset about this. I stuck with this doc who is in Westchester and I am living on the island now. I really thought I would get the chance to have a vaginal birth and it doesn't look that way. I would love to change practices but 1- I do not know if someone would take me this far into the pregnancy and 2-I would feel terrible if god forbid something happened at the vbac and I didn't go for the section.

Any thoughts? Thanks!Chat Icon

If you want a VBAC then you should find a doctor who is supportive of that decision.

Also, it seems like your doctor misled you about your need for a c-section in the first pregnancy, I wouldn't trust him again.

Maybe you should start researching VBACs so you feel more comfortable with it.

You can always try to switch practices and see what your new Dr. says.

At least you know you covered all options.

I agree. Your current doc seems to be a fan of C Sections. If your due in March I can't see how would know you need one already...unless there was a medical reason for it. But that doesn't seem to be the case. Using the reason you had one before and the baby MIGHT be big wouldn't fly with me.

Re: Upset with Dr.-Long

I think oyu should definitely get a second opinion. There are many dr's out there now that happen to be very comfortable with VBAC's and you have nothing to lose with getting another opinion. Especially since it seems like your current dr. has mislead you in the past. I wouldn't want him as my dr. regardless if another c-section was necessary or not.

And midwives will almost always give an opportunity for a VBAC if you want to venture down that road.

Good luck with your decision! Chat Icon

I would get a second opinion at the least and possibly switch doctors. The reading I have done is actually the opposite of what he is saying--many doctors are realizing now that c-sections are not always necessary for a second or third child. Many women can and do deliver by VBAC.

At the very least, it would be good to have a growth sono too so you can see how big this baby likely is before making this decision.

Good luck!

Definitely geta second opinion. Dr. long sounds like he has his mind made up regardless of your circumstance.
I have heard that Dr.s will often prefer C Sections, bc then they are in and out, and don't have to be woken up at 3 AM for a delivery. Shady.
Naughty Dr. Long.

Re: Upset with Dr.-Long

I agree with everyone about getting another opinion. Doctors will still take you at this point and if having a VBAC i that important to you then you should definitely talk to another doctor first. I had a c-section with Kiera because after 2 hours of pushing she just wouldn't come out and her heart rate started dropping. My doctor asked me at my first appointment what I wanted to do this time and I told her I wanted a VBAC. She is all for it and thinks it's great that I want to try again.
