What Would You Do?

DHs 97 y/o grandmother is in the hospital with pneumonia. She is incoherent and seems to have dimentia. She is also sharing a room with another woman who also has pneumonia.

I am 12.5 wks pregnant...if you were pregnant, would you go visit her?

Im pretty sure that pneumonia isnt contagious--but it doesnt hurt to ask your doctor.

But I was also pregnant with DD when I worked on the unit at a nursing/long-term care facility.

I would check with the doctor first, but IMO, I would avoid the hospital, but if you have to go, go for a short period of time, dont touch anything and wash your hands. Wear shoes that you don't normally wear and take them off when you walk in the door at home.

I personally think hospitals in general are a house of germs so I'd stay home.

But if it's important to you, give the doc a call and see what they recommend.

Call you OB. Pneumonia generally isn't contagious, but you never know what's floating around in the hospital, especially now, it's flu season- my FIL was in the hospital for a chunk of my 2nd tri- I went to see him every weekend, without thinking about it. 3 of my friends who are nurses yelled at me for this, luckily, I didn't catch anything.

On one hand, it sounds like she wouldn't know if you're there anyway. But on the other hand, I'd want to be there for Chris. How's he feel about it?

I would call your Dr and then make a judgement from there.

I would visit.
My FIL was in Winthrop and was terminal. I visited him for months when I was pregnant. I would not have thought about not visiting him.

To me it doesn't seem like that big a deal but I'm a nurse and worked in a hospital during my pregnancy. If you want to go just make sure you wash your hands before and after the visit.

I would ask if she is contagious--possibly not since pneumonia usually starts out as a cold or flu (that would be contagious) and progresses to an infection that others usually would not catch.

You may want to go anyway, and just do a very short visit and avoid a great deal of contact with her.

I wouldn't go either. Talk to DH about it and see how he feels.

I would but that's me. It would depend also on how I felt about the situation. If you reeeeaalllllllllyyyyy want to go then maybe you can wear a surgical mask.

Thanks for all your input.

I spoke with my Dr and she advised that I didn't go. If it was absolutely necessary, she suggested a quick, no-contact (with anything) visit.

I would visit her, my husband had pneumonia earlier this year, it isn't contagious.

I would, but I work in a hospital so I am exposed to everything all the time. I just make sure to constantly wash my hands.
