bought my first piece of art tonight
at an art auction.
i got a marc chagall (not an original tho...)
DH and i are going to give it to my parents for hanukkah.

I have seen some of his work. He does nice stuff. He lived to be almost 100 years old.

congrats  I must warn you... you might find it to be a bit contageous 
I inherited my first real art from my family (who are all collectors) My first pieces were purchased 40 years ago by them... a couple first ed. lithographs from moderately to pretty darned famous artists.
then... my best friend is also an up and coming artist... her main 'buzz' is in india, but she has respectable press here too. Many of her best reviewed pieces are of me... usually painted in the middle of the night over icecream during college  .
Those two experiences made me catch the 'bug'. I purchased several seriographs, and have commissioned my friend to paint several portraits of my husband, our family.....
when we got married, we received more really precious originals from my family's collection. we decorate our home in very neutral colors as to not detract from all the art

We purcharsed our first piece last year and we're always looking for more. We picked up two pieces this year.
