Preggos Who Take Mass Transit

I'm curious, how often would you say people offer you a seat on mass transit if there are none? I started thinking about this yesterday when one woman posted that she fell down on the bus. She was standing, and I was going back to the last time anyone offered me a seat on the subway. It has to be at least 2 weeks ago, maybe 3 at this point.

Oh, and I take the subway every day. I'm also noticeably pregnant at 37 weeks, though maybe the 2 and 3 line attracts a less civilized batch of people. Thankfully, I only have 2 more weeks of this to go.

So, is anyone getting seats out there? Hope so!

Re: Preggos Who Take Mass Transit

It depends what line I'm taking. If I;m taking the 6, I have a better shot at being offered a seat.

On the E back to Queens, people are azzholes - occassionally I get offered a seat. It's usually by a man, but most people pretend to look away when they see my belly. It really makes me hate NY'ers.

Re: Preggos Who Take Mass Transit

I def. look pregnant now and no one has offered me a seat yet. My subway ride (on E) is pretty short, but if I felt I needed it, I wouldn't hesitate to ask someone to get their butt up.

ETS: An old woman offered me her seat yesterday - that was my first seat offer in 24 + wks.

Re: Preggos Who Take Mass Transit

Some cow pushed me out of the way for a seat on the way home yesterday. I believe in kharma. Someone else offered me a seat though.

On average, I get offered a seat 3 out of 5 days a week I think. I get a seat every day, but often I stand for a stop or two.

Last Monday I was offered a seat but I didnt' take it because the woman who was offering WAS ALSO PREGNANT!!!
Chat Icon Chat Icon And none of the a$$holes that were sitting around her who could totally see my huge a$$ belly and hear our conversation thought maybe they should get up.

ETA: I ride the D, N and the R. The people who ride the N are the worst so I try to avoid it unless I'm running late.

Yeah, I kind of thought this was universal. Most of the time women offer me their seats, though a few men have, though as I said, lately no one has.

One time I did ask for a seat when I was really tired and a somewhat elderly woman offered me hers! The big beefy buy sitting next to her promptly closed his eyes, pretending to be asleep. I wanted to kick him and say "I know you are awake."

This whole experience has turned me off New Yorkers, I have to say.

Re: Preggos Who Take Mass Transit

At 30 weeks I get offered a seat at least 2x a week on the subway. HOWEVER on the LIRR people actually push me out of the way to get a seat. Last week some guy actually smashed me in the stomach with his briefcase while pushing past me. Other people on the train made rude comments to him about it but he never apologized.

I'm newly pregnant taking the 2 every morning. Any woman I see that is clearly carrying I always get up no matter what. I hope I get the same treatment for when I'm showing.

Re: Preggos Who Take Mass Transit

I take the 4 or the 5 and rarely get offered seats. I like to justify the rudeness of people by thinking that by wearing bulky coats now they don't notice, but I have a big belly now. Mostly women offer me a seat. I try to open my coat in front of men so they see the protruding belly, but they look and then go back to their Blackberries.

Re: Preggos Who Take Mass Transit

I'm the person who fell yesterday- I'm almost 27wks, have been showing for probably 8 or 9 wks now. I've been offered seats maybe twice on the subway, once by a young guy & once by an elderly woman- I was fine so I turned down both offers. The only time I get really frustrated is when I can't even reach a rail or pole to hold onto & nobody moves their hand a little, so at 5'3", I have to balance myself by trying to hold on to the ceiling. Never been offered a seat on the bus. It was never a problem before-I think my center of gravity is shifting.
CJIK to answer the question you wrote in re to my post- I was so mortified, I just got off the bus @ the next stop & walked (limped) the last 9 blocks home.

I didn't take it personally. I was on her right and there was another preggo on her left. She managed to bang into both of us I think.

I made a point of standing in front of her seat and staring at her, before someone else gave me their seat.

This really is terrible! You would think someone might offer to help you up at least and then offer you a seat just for falling, let alone falling when you are pregnant. Lots of bad karma to people on that bus!

Sorry I referred to you as someone--I couldn't remember who had posted, and I didn't see the post at a quick glance.

Usually, I don't really care about not having a seat either. This morning I got annoyed because some guy sitting in front of me was glaring at me cause his paper kept hitting me in the belly. Then I was thinking about your experience, so I got steamed.

I commuted up to week 38 and during my whole pregnancy I was offered a seat 6 times and 4 of those times were by women. And yes, I am a dork because I kept track! Chat Icon

I no longer take mass transit but after commuting to the city for 7 years, I have a huge amount of respect for all of you pregger girls that are doing it right now. I'm sure it's not easy, and you all deserve a huge round of applause! Chat Icon

I take the 1 and 2 lines and I get offered a seat maybe once a week, if I'm lucky. I honestly don't understand people. So rude.

Re: Preggos Who Take Mass Transit

Uhgg... I can't imagine commuting in to NY now - I hated it when I wasn't preggo.

I remember seeing a pg woman on the B line years ago and no one offered her a seat. I went home an lectured to DH that he should always offer his seat to a pg woman.

Bless all of you who commute while pg.

Re: Preggos Who Take Mass Transit

I always offer my seat to preggo women, its digusting that its usually the men who pretend not to notice. However, unless they are really late in the pregnancy, sometimes its hard to tell if they are prego, especially now with people wearing winter coats and stuff.
I would hate to insult someone if they weren't pregnant just have a belly like me naturally Chat Icon

I have been showing for only 2 weeks and the only night there where no seats, an nice man insisted that I sit in his seat.

He was good looking too! Chat Icon

So that was 1 of 1. So far so good. We'll see what happens over the next few months.
