No. It's like a physical soap opera laced with immorality. If they are interested in wrestling, they can watch high school or olympic wrestling. At least they are competing for an actual title.

Can you tell I'm not a fan? Chat Icon

Re: Would you allow your child to watch WWE wrestling?

sorry for the cameo - not parents yet

but to follow-up to boosh's point:

We both watched wrestling at a very young age - her at 8 and me at 9 - and we've been hooked ever since.

Granted, wrestling is a lot different now than it was then. Then, it was just about the matches. The storylines were simple. X wants to beat Y for the title. Or X wants to beat Y because Y attacked him from behind the week before, and X is out for revenge.

Now, there's more sex and foul language. The gimmicks are racier, from pimps, to porn stars, etc. So, we'd definitely look to keep a child away from wrestling in the early years - from 6-9. If anything - maybe just the Friday night show that airs from 8-10. Since it's on in prime time and on network, it's tamer than the cable shows.

We're not going to force wrestling on our kids. It will be on because we watch it. And the cable shows will be on after they go to bed.

If the kids take an interest when they're of age, that's one thing. And if they do, I'll do what my father did with me. He heavily monitored my watching of it, reinforcing that they are actors, it's not real, and if the moves are done by someone who doesn't know how to do them, they can get seriously hurt. When he'd catch me doing moves with my friends, I'd be disallowed from watching it for a period of time.

So, I think it can be done with tight monitoring and open dialogue about the show. It's when you leave them to watch it unattended and unsupervised - is when you can run into trouble.

i can't imagine it's any different from the video games they play... so i'd say sure i'd let my kids watch it.

I'm not sure if I would let my son or daughter watch it or not.

BUT...I just wanted to say that how he treats his parents has to do with how the parents let him treat them. Not just because he watches wrestling and plays violent games. The parents should reinforce what is proper behavior and set a firm line between fantasy and reality.

Definately not appropriate in my book but I believe every parent has to decide what is best for their child.

The bigger problem for you and DH is finding common ground on these issues even BEFORE you are parents. It definately helps down the road.

I completely agree! I think part of the problem is that my SIL NEVER speaks up and to make matters worse, her husband thinks it's funny. Chat Icon Apparently, he was raised to believe women are second class citizens, but that's a WHOLE different story for another post!

They watch wrestling together as a family but unfortunately, it doesn't seem like they instill in him that it's not real and that you don't act that way towards ANYONE. And clearly they don't monitor what he can and can't watch.

Personally, I have nothing against wrestling, though it's not my first or second choice of what to watch on TV. I'm just not so sure it's appropriate for very young children.

Oh definitely! I don't think it would be that big of deal for us. We don't watch it with any regularity what so ever. DH will stop on it if he's flipping through the channels but by no means is he a big fan at all. Not to mention, if our child is that young, he or she will be in bed fast Chat Icon. Chat Icon

As they get older, we will need to have a "sit-down" and really discuss at what age we think it will be appropriate for our child to watch it.

Re: Would you allow your child to watch WWE wrestling?

"violence" is subjective, and depends on the DC. I'm more likely to let DC watch something that is violent, but can't be replicated (Transformers, for instance). He may try to duplicate wrestling. However, if I saw over the years that he was mature and restrained enough so that he wouldn't try the moves, I might let him.

I really think it all comes down to the individual child. There are many adults that I don't think are mature enough to watch violent shows... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Remember that story a few years back in the news where this kid,Lionel Tate, was doing wrestling moves on a younger child and killed her? Any more questions?

gotta disagree kevin

i know all about the case, being a fan and reading about it

This was a case where the kid was not supervised and just allowed to watch whatever he wanted, without an open dialogue between him and his parents. He also had some other issues.

My point is that it can be done and can be fine, as long as it's supervised, there's open dialogue with the child that it's scripted and acting, and that re-enactment of the moves can cause serious injury. If I was caught acting out moves, I was barred from watching it for a while.

My 2 month old is already 'watching' it with DH. Chat Icon He grew up watching it and is normal (somewhat Chat Icon ). There will be many discussions that it's not real and to never try it himself. That's the stuff that makes me nervous.

Re: Would you allow your child to watch WWE wrestling?

I grew up watching wresting and I think I turned out fine Chat Icon .
My brothers used to love it and try to act it out between the two of them, which caused some trouble....but I dont' think it's anything that wouldn't have happened anyway between two brothers 16 months apart!

I think it has waaaay more to do with the parents than just a tv show.
