Would you allow your child to watch WWE wrestling?
Hi everyone...
My husband and I are not parents yet, but we were talking about children watch wrestling. More specifically, we were talking about his sister and her husband allowing their 7yo to watch the WWE on tv and have even taken him to live events. This has been going on since he was about 4 or 5.
My opinion of the situation is that it's WAY too violent and generally speaking just not appropriate for someone his age. Besides the violence aspect I think there are heavy sexual undertones and promotes the objectifying of women.
Anyway, I think watching wrestling combined with the fact that he plays alot of violent video games has had a negative impact on him. He seems to be aggressive towards his mom and dad and I think b/c of it, in-part, he's not very respectful of his mother.
Additionally, it seems socially, he has a very hard time connecting with people. He doesn't look you in the eye when (and IF he decides) to speak to you and seem VERY uncomfortable around adults.
Bottom line, while I don't think wrestling is the sole cause of this child's behavior, I do think it plays a part.
My husband, on the other hand, doesn't seem to think it's as big of a contributer. He thinks the child is "just shy" and the fact that there aren't many kids in his neighborhood is an additional cause for his shyness.
My husband grew up going to local wrestling matches and has very fond memories of bonding with his brothers and father. Unfortunately, I think he's comparing apples to oragnes. I don't think the current WWE wrestling evens are anything like what his dad took he and his brothers to.
What do you think?

I agree. I don't think a 7 year old should be watching wrestling. I grew up watching wrestling on TV but it wasn't like it is today and I watched it as an older child. I was definitely older than 7.

Right?? I could see if he was 17 years old, but 7? That just seems a little too young for my liking...

No I personally think it's too young for a child to watch. Even a tween, but that is my personal opinion. My DH would say otherwsie.

why not? I used to watch wrestling with my dad all the time at that age. We even went to a wrestling match at MSG where I saw Hulk Hogan

Re: Would you allow your child to watch WWE wrestling?
Absolutely not. Dh is into it and he agrees not for our kids. When we were younger it was much diff than it is now. Now its like some sort of sexual soap opera where people beat each other up. Its bloody, and just out of control.

Me too. My little cousin is 7 years old and has been watching it at least a year and he is fine.

Do you know what his rationale is? he watched it growing up along with his brother and cousins and they are perfectly fine. never acted out the scenes in a crazy way, but I'm sure they had their fun
i'm a paranoid mom
ETA: I have to agree it's changed so much now. I think when we were growing up it fell under the Superman title (at least Hogan did).

Re: Would you allow your child to watch WWE wrestling?
I think I would try and steer my 7 yr to watch something else and I would not let DH sit there with DC and watch that trash. I would definitely not let a 4-5 yr old watch it.

No. It's like a physical soap opera laced with immorality. If they are interested in wrestling, they can watch high school or olympic wrestling. At least they are competing for an actual title.
Can you tell I'm not a fan?

Re: Would you allow your child to watch WWE wrestling?
DH and I watch ourselves, but we know it's all fake and rehearsed, etc.
I do NOT think kids that age should watch....first off...it's on at 9-11 on Mon night and 8-10 on Fri nights....what is a 7 YO doing up at that hour???
A child that age does NOT know the difference between what is real and what is staged, and yes, the show has blatant sexual references and scantily clad women are NOT for a childs' eyes.
Our kids will not watch at that age

But I think the wrestling then was MUCH different than now. Back then they didn't have "Bra and Panties" matches. Would you really want your child watching two women rolling around on the ground in their underwear?

I asked myself the same question... Like I said, I think there's a multitude of issues here.

Re: Would you allow your child to watch WWE wrestling?
My brother works for the WWE. It is his dream job. He watched wrestling as a child and played video games. He was/is still respectful to my parents. I think that if a parent dumps a kid in front of the tv and does not provide love, attention and wholesome family activities for the child and the family that is where problems can crop up. But no, wrestling is not going to harm a kid in and of itself. If a parent is not attentive and does not explain that it is choreographed, hard work and painful, then yes, a child could get a skewed perspective. It is entirely based on how a parent, parent's their child and how easliy influenced the child is that makes the biggest impact.
ETA: The late night stuff should just be for adults and 7 is a little young. 10 y.o. I think would prob be a little better to watch something at 10 pm.

Okay i guess I get the bad mommy award, but I let Brandon, who is now 14 watch it when he was 7 and known as WWF. It was nothing like it is now and I even took him to a few matches at the Garden

I totally agree and no, I don't think he's being taught all of that at home. But I still think it's not suitable for a 7 year old to watch regardless of what they're taught.
Again, I think, there is a strong sexual undertone and it's just not appropriate for kids that young.
I could see if all they did was wrestle, like they did back in the day, but it's so much more than that.
I equate it to going to the movies. I wouldn't send a 7 year old to an R rated or PG-13 rated movie, so why would I let them watch this on TV?

If we were going by today's interpretation of WWE I probably would not let a little one watch it. It has really changed

Very well said, I totally agree. While me and DH are not parents yet we have been avid wrestling fans for over 20 years, I started watching it when I was 8 and DH when he was seven.
While I will agree that it is not the same stuff that we grew up with odds are when we do have kids it will be on the TV, it will be there choice if they decide to watch it, but not anytime soon, at least 8-9 years old, possibly older.
