FMLA for DH
Has anyone's DH taken FMLA? My husband got the paperwork, although his company was not thrilled he asked for it. He works for a very large company, however. I am just beginning to investigage how we go about this. He has no sick or vacation time left for this year so was going to upt in for it now (I am having a very difficult pregnancy and at home) and then for the 12 weeks after the baby is born. He wouldn't take the solid block of time, jsut maybe two weeeks when baby is born and then intermiettent days as needed. We know he doesn't get paid for this and that's ok but jsut wondering if anyone else has planned this type of arrangmenet, he said its how it works but I do not know, it seems very complicated!! And not sure what the doctor needs to do....

He is entitled to 12 weeks unpaid leave under the FMLA law. Unless the company does not fall under the rules of the law, they have to allow his leave.

The doctor shouldn't need to do anything if your DH is just taking off once the baby is born.
All he has to produce is a birth certificate to his HR Dept to prove he's taking leave for baby bonding.
As far as how the leave works, he gets 12 weeks or 60 days. He can take that all at once or intermittantly. As long as they have some way to track how many days he's using and they adjust his payroll accordingly it shouldn't be an issue.
Even if it's a large company, I can tell you from experience that very few dads take advantage of the leave so it's rare to have to deal with it.

Does your DH want to take some FMLA leave before the baby is born? If so, your doctor may need to fill out paperwork depending on the policies of your DH's employer. If your DH's employer requests medical certification from your health care provider, he will have to provide paperwork from your doctor. Your DH can wait and see if his employer requests this information or he can check with HR. If your DH is only taking leave after the baby is born, he shouldn't need to submit anything from your doctor.
