Amnio

Anyone have an amnio? I am having one on Nov. 7th and I am a nervous wreck? I need to have one because I will be 36 when I deliver and I have had 3 or more miscarriages, which I found out increases your risk of having a baby with chromosonal disorders. Does it hurt? During? After? Any info would be appreciated. TIA

Re: Amnio

I had one done and it was a little uncomfortable. I think I was more nervous than anything else.

You just need to make sure you are as relaxed as possible and try not to move.

You will do fine!

Re: Amnio

I had one in September. It hurt when the needle went in and I was sore for like a day after. Not normal at all according to others I spoke with. I'm just a baby about needles.

All went well and if you think that you should have one, then speak with a genetic to answer any questions that you may have.

I am curious about the miscarriage part of your question. Did your Dr tell you that? How is your pregnancy going so far? How many weeks are you? Have you ever had a pathology test done when you miscarried? As far as amnio-the risks are low but there is a slight risk-your Dr will go over it with you.

Re: Amnio

I met with the Genetic Counselor and she told me that if you have had 3 or more 1st trimester miscarriages you are at higher risk for having a baby with a chromosomal abnormality. She said the reason is the #1 reason for 1st tirmester m/c's IS chromosomal abnormality. I did have testing on one of my m/c's that I needed a D&C for and I am honestly unsure of what the results were. The coulselor did explain the procedure to me but I want to hear it from the people who have been through it. I am 14 weeks and will be about 16 weeks when I have it.

Well I'm sorry but she is wrong. I know it sounds crazy but from everything I have read more than 2 miscarriages points to an immunological issue(clotting disorder, antibodies, etc.) rather than a chromosomal one. Is there anyway to get that pathology report? Your Dr should have it. If they can tell you if your baby is chromosomally normal than that is an indicator that it is OK. Have you had krytyping done? If you have made it to 14 weeks I would say you are probably good-what week did you have your miscarriages in?

I didn't have an amnio either time but just wanted to clarify something:

Actually 3 or more miscarriages could be an indicator that you have a chromsome disorder that is leading to the miscarriages. The miscarriages themselves don't cause a chromosome issue.

Also, there is a natural filtering process that takes place with pregnancies. Most pregnancies with chromosome issues don't make it past the first trimester. By virtual that you've made it this far, is a good sign.

Also as for age, a 40 year old has only a slight risk (1.5%) of having a chromosome issue so age isn't as much of a factor as you may think.

Good luck with your amnio & the results!

I did not get an amnio, so I can't tell you how the procedure feels. From what others have told me, it's not so painful, and generally, it goes smoothly. There are some risks though.

Honestly, if you are a wreck about this, you may want to go over the pros and cons again with your doctor and DH. It depends how you feel about the procedure and also about the outcome. Would you keep your baby no matter what? If something is wrong, do you want the extra time to prepare? There are a lot of questions to consider.

My doctor pushed me to have one since at my ultrascreen, my Downs risk was close to a positive result, though it was still negative. Also, when I looked at the risk for my age (40), my results were still much better than the results for women my age. And the idea of having an amnio was making me a wreck.

I'm not saying you should skip the test--this was my choice, and our circumstances are different. But I wouldn't automatically say you must have one either, particularly because of your age. The risks are still relatively low at 36. Did you have an ultrascreen? If so, how was that?

Not that I want to get into a debate on this or anything, but . . . . I have a friend who has had 6 first trimester miscarriages. She was able to get testing on 4 of the six and they all showed a chromosomal abnormality.

As for the original question . . . I had an amnio at 16 weeks due to the ultrascreen results combined with my 40+ status. I honestly think DH was more upset/traumatized by the whole experience than I was. The needle was less painful than a flu shot. I was a bit sore about 3 hours later, but by the next morning I felt fine. I was told to stay off my feet for a day by the MD, but the girls here all recommended longer than that, so I had the amnio on a Wednesday afternoon, and stayed home from work Thursday & Friday. I only got out of bed to use the bathroom. Maybe a bit overly cautious, but since DH was able to come home for lunch those two days, it was well worth it for peace of mind.

Re: Amnio

I had an amnio due to my age 41, it was a bit uncomfortable but not too bad. I think mentally I stressed myself out and made it to be worse than it actually was.

On another note I had 6 miscarriages and the pathology on the 3 D&C's that I had all had normal chromosones

Re: Amnio

My best friend had an amnio b/c she delivered after 35. She said it wasn't so bad, but she was off her feet for 3 days. I personally, would have one if I was over 35. I'm 34 with this pregnancy and throughout. I was on the fence about doing an amnio since I'll still be 34 when I deliver. We are going to see what the Ultrascreen says. I personally would want to know so that I can do what's best for my family. I also believe amnios today can test for other things than just downs. I think they can even detect heart trouble that can be managed upon delivery if I'm not mistaking... can be life saving if that's the case.

As for the m/c's... you really should have been tested or should test for blood clot disorders such as Factor 5. My hemotologist tortured me by making me read about a retrospective study that found a high percentage of women who m/c recurrently to have such disorders - specifically Prothrombin (I have both). If you do have any of this, you should be on a blood thinner during pregnancy. I hope everything goes well and I hear not to fear the amnio.

I have been tested for clotting disorders, because we were considering trying Heparin. But all my tests were normal, so I was not a candidate for it.
I also have no issues with a tilted uterus or anything like that. I have m/c'd anywhere between 7 weeks and 12 weeks. I am sure my Doc has those results, I guess, I just did not want to know the truth, so I never pushed to find out. I know that I need to have this test done, It is just a little nerve racking.

I was told by the Genetic Counselor that my risk at age 36 is 1 in 150 of having a baby with a Chromosomal Abnormality. The risk is increased according to her because of my history of 1st trimester M/C's. And the risk of something going wrong with an amnio is 1 in 400. I have discussed this with my Doc. who I love and trust, and the Genetic Counselor and most importantly my family. I feel like I have made the best choice for me, but never the less its still nerve racking to me.
