c-section questions?

I have never had c-section before,How long does it take for everything to get set up before surgery? How long after the first cut, before the baby is born? How long to sew up everything? How long from start to finish? How long before the numbness wears off? Any answers would be great,I've never experieced this before and i am having one in a few days.I am so scared.

Re: c-section questions?

Well this is what I remember of mine....

I got to the hospital at 11am, and I went in for my C at 5pm ( I had to wait for my Dr to arrive and they had to put me on med's for my high BP), they got me ready and numb, and once I was numb the Dr checked me and said he was starting, I felt him go across my stomach with the knife (sounds horrible but I felt nothing bad), after that I would say he had Julia out in 5-10 mins, I felt a lot of pressure when they were taking her out which was normal. Once she was out, they fixed her all up and took her upstairs, my DH went with the baby, I was in the OR for another 10-15 mins while they stiched me up, then I went to my recovery room.

I hope that helps!

Re: c-section questions?

I had to have an emergency c-section after being in labor for 20+ hours & not progressing.

I already had the catheder in & the epidural (so they just added more meds in it) so it didn't take very long at all for me to set it up.

I remember being wheeled in to the ER & them saying the time at 9:06 & then the baby's birth time was 9:26. It was fast. I truly did not feel anything.

DH said it was another 15 minutes b4 I got to recovery. I was feeling okay after, just shivering. I don't remember when the numbness wore off; but I felt great until about 12 hours later when the epidural effects wore off.

To be honest it truly was not bad AT ALL. Just definitely get up as soon as you can the next day; walk around. I healed fine, you just feel a bit numb at the incision (I still feel numb when I touch it--4 months later). Just don't lift anything heavy.

It'll be fine & soon you'll be holding your DC.

Re: c-section questions?

I got wheeled into the operating room around 1:30pm....the surgery probably started at 2:00 or so and dd was born at 2:23....It takes about 10 minutes to get the baby out once the incision is made and then about another 20 minutes or so to sew you up. I was numb for about 1 hour after the operation.

I had a GREAT experience, don't worry Chat Icon

My daugher was an emergency and I was in the OR and she was out in about 5 minutes.

My boys were both planned. I arrived at the hospital around 6AM. I was monitored, shaved, given some antacidy stuff to drink, a bag of fluid thru IV, wheeled to the OR alittle before 8 with Son #1 and about 8:15 with Son #2. My 1st son was born at 8:07 so he took about 10 minutes from start to his actual birth. My 2nd son I was in the OR and with scar tissue he was born at 8:42, from start to birth was about 15 minutes. It took about 1/2 an hour to fix me up so there was no hole in my bodyChat Icon I was with all 3 of them within 3 hours after birth. They want you to be able to move or bend a knee before they release you from recovery.

You will have a cath in all day so take advantage of not getting up but once they take it out my advice is ask for pain killers 1st THEN get up... slowly and walk around. Passing gas will be your best friend too so no shameChat Icon

I had 2 fabulous experiences (the last one they gave me something I was allergic to and it wasn't very good so I wouldn't say it was great). If you are super nervous ask to meet with the anistegiologist before the surgery and let him know your concerns. I had Ketamine with Son #1 because I wasn't numb enough and I tripped out during his delivery. I talked to them before it and with Son #2 I didn't get that but they were able to give me laughing gas which REALLY helped me relax... again, they said it was not harmful to the baby.

Good luck, everything will be fine. Make sure you have your concerns heard, if you have any of course, because they tend to try to make you extra comfy if they know of any concerns you may haveChat Icon
