Im not a mom but how do you "forget your child in a car"

I just don't get it Chat Icon Moms please help me is it really something thats easy to do ? Chat Icon

"Oh my God! Oh my God!" A frantic mother screams. The woman had just run out of a store realizing she left her 7-month old daughter alone in a hot car. The drama was caught on tape in the parking lot of a Target in suburban Kansas City. The mother is inconsolable as she tells police she was inside the store's pharmacy when she saw police activity out front and realized what was going on. Fortunately for the Kansas City mom, her baby came out of the ordeal ok after being left alone for about thirty minutes.

Anchor Dana Wright of KCTV 5 was riding along with paramedics when they got the emergency call of a child in distress. Wright tells INSIDE EDITION, "...about ten minutes later we're still trying to figure out where the mother was and we hear screaming...very loud screaming. And we turned around and we see this. The scene Wright describes is of the frantic mother returning to her black SUV, by this time surrounded by police and emergency personnel.

Police say the mother left the child inside her black SUV with the windows rolled up. Sadly, this incident in Kansas City is just the latest in an epidemic of babies being left in hot cars.

"It never surprises me that it keeps happening, Jannette Fennell, the founder of the organization of Kids and Cars tells INSIDE EDITION. It really disappoints me." In some recent, but chilling public service announcements, Fennell tries to educate parents about the dangers of leaving kids alone in hot cars.

INSIDE EDITION talks with an expert to find out what parents can do to help keep their children safe. Our expert says something as simple as leaving a stuffed animal in the passengers seat of your car can serve as a reminder, and can make the difference between life and death. Fennell says, the animal was a visual cue. It reminded her that there was precious cargo in the back seat of her vehicle. It becomes a simple reminder that will hopefully prevent frightening scenes like the one outside of the Kansas City Target store.

Thank Goodness the baby is OK.
I don't understand how this can happen.
I am a mother. Every traffic light I am turning my head to check on DS.
He has car seat toys that he loves to play with. Once it gets quiet, I check in my mirror to make sure all is OK.
Even when hes not in the car, Im turning around to check. LOL.
Total Habit.

I will never ever understand how people can do this...EverChat Icon

I don't get it either, even when I have my dog in the car with me I keep checking to make sure she's ok back there. I couldn't imagine forgetting a baby!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I mean, what else could be on these people's minds that would cause them to forget their child!??!!!!!!

And the Kids and Cars organization, it's so sad that this happens often enough that there would be a need for such a thing!! Chat Icon

Re: Im not a mom but how do you "forget your child in a car"

Let me tell you something... you have to be a special kind of stupid to do something like this...

WhennCailen is in the car with me, he is on my mind every single second. I drive more carefully, I feel its not worth it to weave, cut someone off, try to beat the light, or anything else.

Even after I drop him off at daycare, I always look in the backseat... maybe its an ocd thing, but I dont care...

I would rather take an extra glance in the backseat then ever risk forgetting him... but I think abt him all day... theres no way I could ever forget him anywhere!!!!

I look at Noah about 575 times when we drive just to the corner and back.

ITs either they are on drugs or lying about the "forgetting"

I agree. I'll be honest... it is a pain in the a s s going shopping with Cailen - I do errands when he's in daycare. Getting him out of the car seat (where he is always asleep) - strapping him into the stroller, pushing a stroller and a cart... or trying to carry him as he hangs like dead weight... I anow wish everything was drive thru...

I have fantasized, thinking, man it would be so easier if I could just crack the window... but I would never do it - the only time I leave him is when he is with my 16 year old stepdaughter, with the engine and AC on, and its for a quick run into get something I need desperately...

I think these women knew what they were doing, saw the cops, and then panicked and pretended they just remembered to keep from getting in trouble!!!

One time, I forgot myself in the car.... man was I scared when I realized what I did! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't understand it, either. Also, if you can't remember you kid in the back seat, how is a stuffed animal in the front seat going to help. If you need to turn your head to see the animal, wouldn't you also turn to see your DC? I agree with the APs that she just got caught, and tried to cover... Chat Icon Chat Icon

I actually have the opposite issue. I feel like DS is ALWAYS in the car with me, even when he is not. I am habitually checking the back seat.

Re: Im not a mom but how do you "forget your child in a car"

ugh, I think that is TOTALLY Unacceptable.,..on this other site I go on, there was this big debate cause alot of people were saying "I feel so bad for these parents" and others (like me) feel bad for no one but those poor babies who are left to die (in some cases) in hot cars

It is totally inexcusable. If you cannot remember you have a child in the car, YOU SHOULD NOT BE A PARENT...PERIOD Chat Icon

Re: Im not a mom but how do you "forget your child in a car"

Unfortunately, this has happened a lot down here in Texas. Every summer there are reports of a child that died from being left inside a hot car in the Texas sun. Mom's and dad's have both been guilty of it. There was even a day care bus driver who had dropped off all the kids except one. The one he had left in the bus didn't make it. Chat Icon

Re: Im not a mom but how do you "forget your child in a car"

Earlier this year it happened in St. Louis and the parents were a pediatrician and a researcher.

The baby died when each of them thought the other had taken the baby out of the car to the on-site daycare already.

How you can continue to treat children as a professional after you've done something like that?
