deja vu all over again

why do people say that??!

the definition of deja vu is that you feel you've done/seen something before.

deja vu all over again is redundant!
who teaches these people to speak?!

I think it's a Yogi Berra quote. When people say it, they usually know it's not right. He's famous for his wacky way of saying things.

Yes it's attributed to Yogi Berra.

Re: deja vu all over again

i stand "educated"

i know that yogi berra is famous for "interesting" things he's said, this one... i wasn't familiar with.

but i still do believe that there are A LOT of people who say it and don't realize that they're being redundant.

Re: deja vu all over again

I'll use that phrase, but intentionally knowing the background, and the redundancy..

I love Yogi Berra quotes... :)

I'll often paraphrase his quote about "Nobody goes there anymore because it's too crowded." I love that... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: deja vu all over again

Well, I have learned something today...
Another thing that bothers me is when people use the "deja Vu" meaning they HAVE been there before- not the "sense" of being there before. Hope that made sense... but it bugs me : )

What's to debate about "I could care less" -- ? I don't see how you can argue that's correct. It's I couldn't care less.

My biggest pet peeve is irregardless.

IRREGARDLESS is NOT a word, and if it were a word, it would mean the exact opposite of what you are trying to say. It's REGARDLESS!

There, I feel better now.

I wrote my college entrance essay based on a Yogi Berra quote. He is famously hysterical. The funny thing is, I don't even think that he tries to be funnyChat Icon

Technically, there are cases where it *can* be correct. However, very few people use it that way. I posted an example in another thread where it is 100% correct:

"I could care less.... Not a lot less, but I could care a little bit less"

Chat Icon

An example is "I could care less about Britney Spears and her kids." She has nothing to do with my life, and she brought all of it on herself, but I do care a little (just a little) because she's still a mother. Therefore, I *could* care just a little bit less.... Chat Icon

That is the biggest stretch I've seen yet to justify the incorrect use of a colloquialism. Chat Icon Yes, it's correct if you actually mean to convey that you could possibly care less, but c'mon... how many people ACTUALLY mean it that way? The vast majority of people who say "I could care less" actually just don't know what the correct phrase is or have gotten so used to saying it the wrong way, that's how it comes out.

So sure, in theory your position is fine... but I think the reality is that most people aren't actually trying to convey what you wrote. Chat Icon

And I DO care about Britney Spears in a very, very not-caring at all kinda way. Chat Icon

You're 100% right. I don't think anyone besides me (I'm special... Chat Icon ) analyzes things this deeply, and rationalizes colloquialisms literally. It's a sickness, I know... Chat Icon

I just like to logically prove that it *can* be used correctly. However, nobody does... I could care less if nobody analyzes things like me.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We should start a mission where we get people to understand "I could care less", and get them to use it correctly....

Together, we can save the English language!
