Did you put your heat on yet?

I am debating on whether or not should put the heat on in our new house. We arent living there yet, just doing the renovations, but I have seen in the early morning the temperature has been under 40 degrees. Do you think I should turn it on yet or wait?

Re: Did you put your heat on yet?

I am going to try to hold out to Nov. 1 for heat..but I do have a small space heater in the room I am in.

Scott - just make sure your heat is set somewhere in the 50's so that your pipes don't freeze!!

Re: Did you put your heat on yet?

OUr heat is set to go on automatically when it falls below a certain temp. When I woke up this morning, it was on!! I left it though bc it was a little cold in the house. We are getting a brand new hot water heater installed on Wed too!

Yup, ours is on low, it's freezing in the house. but if you're not living there, then I wouldn't turn it on yet.

Re: Did you put your heat on yet?

i would wait if i were you..just put it on when you go over if you are cold but dont leave it on if you are not there..
Can you leave it set at maybe 65 in case it does get too cold?

I dont think the pipes will freeze just yet

Re: Did you put your heat on yet?

What set the thermostat? The heat wont go on unless I put on the burner though....

If we were living there, I would have the burner on for hot water but we arent living there so we have no need for the hot water right now.....

Re: Did you put your heat on yet?

I agree with the post to just keep it in the 50's to keep your pipes from freezing. If we hit a cold snap in the next month - it would be better to be safe than sorry :) Probably low 50's you'd be fine - esp if you don't have many drafts, etc in the house you'd hardly use much.

Maybe ask your burner company (or Realtor if they already know you are keeping the house vacant for a while, and feel funny telling a company you may be unfamiliar with) for any other suggestions? We asked our realtor a lot of stupid questions when we moved and they were very helpful.

Good Luck!

Re: Did you put your heat on yet?

I think im going to put it on and leave it between 50 and 54 degrees. I have to get my oil company over anyway, I think there may be something wrong with the boiler.....

They are coming november 30th to do a tune up but I think that I need them to come sooner, and bleed the system amongst other things

Re: Did you put your heat on yet?

The thing is that I don't want to have frozen pipes or pipes that burst. I had that problem when I lived at my parents house. All of our pipes burst. The boiler was on the outside of the house, in an uninsulated room. Well we had water everywhere...I know that probably wont happen, but I dont want to take any chances, you know
