Re: Opinions please. DH & I Had an tiff about schooling (long)

I worked in a montessori type public school and really loved it for younger ones. But as they got older, they were lacking experience with deadlines, and discipline. Maybe it was just the school where I was, but they truly expected to be catered too and honestly I did not find them any smarter or more knowledgable than the public schoolers that I worked with prior.

I think it really depends where you live. I know that there are some excellent public schools( I happen to work in one in CA) but there are also really crappy ones- even the "highly rated" ones. So I think it depends on your financial situation, coupled with the quality of your local schools.

ITA.

I also think a lot of it depends on the child. I had considered Montessori for Joseph & was told by several teachers & a school psychologist that it's not the environment for him. He thrives in structured time & gets into trouble during unstructured activities.

If you have a school district that promotes advancement, you may not have to opt for private school. Joseph was in kindergarten only a few weeks when his teacher called me about getting him a special enrichment reading teacher. He was already reading & many other kids weren't. They didn't want him to get bored with reading & wanted to encourage it. He was learning significantly more things in Catholic school, however I wasn't a fan of the environment.

One of our friends' children are going to Friend's Academy on full scholarship. I know their curriculum seems to be top notch.

This is really a matter of personal choice I beleiev.
DH and I are still arguing about this.
He went to Catholic school, and I went to public school, and he wants to put them in a Catholic school. I personally think they are NOT the greastest and get too hyped up, and thinl public schools are just as good, but we may not be living where we are by the time they get older.
This is something know one can tell you what to do, UI just think you 2 have to make this choice yourself...good luck and you have lots of time to decideChat Icon

Wow, the BC school seems like an enormous financial commitment. I admire your willingness to start the sacrifice now for DS's education!

OK, what I don't understand is this: is this BC thing a Pre-K through 12 thing? Why did you end up in public school? And will your son be doing the same eventually or will he attend college straight from BC? If so, what is that $20K x 12 years or more? Forgive my "tuition ignorance" I attended a CUNY school!

Secondly, if BC made you "hate" mainstream schooling, is that a gamble you want to take with DS? Maybe I am reading your words wrong on this one.

Lastly, if he only goes to public school (and you supplement with activities, as your DH suggested), he will not know any different--which could be a good or a bad thing, I suppose.

Just some rambling thoughts...

I agree a lot with this.

I was in public schools my whole life. My K-5 was in a nice area...even the food was good. I was bored to tears because I was too smart for my classmates, but you had to be a GENIUS literally to be skipped ahead. The pitfall of learning to read at 4. Middle school and high school, we had moved and the schools had a larger pool of less motivated students (& parents)...it was annoying, but by then I was able to choose the classes I took and take advanced levels so I didn't have much interaction with the riff raff.

Meanwhile, I have friends who attended private schools and I can tell you that money does NOT equal better students or learning for every child. Children are either already a little brighter/more intuitive or they're not. And bad kids are still going to be hanging around the good schools.

Considering I really want to have 3 kids and send them all to college, I would just have to send htem all to public schools, hire tutors if needed and allow them extracurricular activities after school because I don't think I could handle paying $60k for the next 30 years.

It's all what you and your child make of it....some real morons come out of great schools and yet every so often you hear about the kid who's going to Harvard from Harlem.
