Manhattan smarties, help me with this

I'm taking my OOT family to manhattan today, they don't want to do anything specific, but the mentioned the empire state building and times square. Let me know how this sound.

A train to 42nd street -Times Square..show them the MTV store, the huge Toys R Us, take it alll in, take pictures,m walk up Times Square to 47th Street...

Walk across town on 47th Street to Rockefeller Center. See Rockefeller Center, the Today Show, Radio City.

Walk up 5th Avenue to see St. Patrick's Cathedral. Isn't the World of Disney store, etc also up this way?

OK, now I lost the Empire State Building. They don't necessarily want to go inside, they just want to SEE it. You can see it down 5th from Rockefeller Center, right?

Then take the F from Rockefeller center down to Jay Street and the A train home.

Does this sound like a good route? Any other suggestions for a better route or other things to see along the way? They don't want it to be a whole day thing, just walk around, take pictures and come home. I figured 2-2 1/2 hours in manhattan, and then 2 hours travelling.

Walk down from Rock Center on 5th Avenue to 34th Street and the Empire State Building will be right there.

At Rock Center, why don't you go to the top of the rock- it's different than going to the top of the empire state building- and they would probably be able to see the Empire State Building from there.
you can even go on the website- i think- and put in for a reserved time...

Is it expensive to do top of the rock? They're kind of cheap, and I don't have money to pay for that many people?

I was thinking of taking the train from 53rd and 5th ot herald square, seeing smpire state, seeing macy's and hopping on the A at Penn station

Top of the rock and top of the empire state building ar eboth about $20 per person and we're going to be 6-7 people. I wish my uncle weren't so damn cheap.

do they havee an aversion to walking?

if not, walk it. it's so much better to see the city walking than going to random points of interest via the nasty/hot/disgusting train system.

you can also get on one of the tour buses. You can just jump on and off as you wish. There are plenty of them in Times Square.

The Empire state bldg is actually on 34th st, a block away from Macys Herald Square. Why dont you start there, then walk your way uptown? Its a nice walk,
