We should have an Out of State board...

not trying to start drama, and I do love seeing all the beautiful houses in the south, but sometimes the comments on "wow my mortgage is so low, why would I ever live on LI Chat Icon " get on my nerves! LI is expensive, always has been, and always will be.

I agree. An OOS board would pool folks together in similar situations.

I think people love to compare and contrast, I think its okay for everyone to post on the same board! Everyone has different experiences and like to express that.

TOTALLY not trying to cause drama, but why does it bother you when people say they would never live on LI? I love to look at really expensive houses, and really cheap houses and say I would love that, or Oooh, I would hate that. Its just a bit of fun!!

Especially since everyone knows that people from the NYC are are OBSESSED with real estate!!!

it doesnt bother me when they say "i'll never live on LI", because I will never live in certain areas too - but when people say, "i dont know why someone would pay so much for a house when you can get it cheaper here" - like we are stupid for living on LI or something.

its the "why would you ever live on LI and spend that much on a shack" with the eyeroll that bugs me.

Re: We should have an Out of State board...

I think what is annoying is that if, a present living Long Islander, would say "I'd never live in FL because of the weather" I would get attacked
BUT
its ok for some folks to say "I'd never live on LI because of the prices"

Its a double edged sword. I do think two boards would come in handy when topics like:
-schools
-taxes
-home ins.
come into play. There was a post of a girl who was trying to sell her house in I think Delware and pretty much refused to lower and because of it her house was on the market for over a year. Well the majority of us LI'ers were like"its a buyer's market, etc". Well that may be the case here but not in Delware. You know what I mean?

good point - just like Jess' mortgage poll. the results are going to be crazy because cost of living is different everywhere.

exactly, but I do find it ironic that all the girls that typed "I couldn't afford LI"'s mortgage payment weren't that different than mine (with taxes). Now granted I'm in a condo, but I feel like saying "never say never" you know.

Re: We should have an Out of State board...

If you're happy where you live and are comfortable living there, why let other people's comments bother you?

This LI/OOS "thing" has been going on for years. If you know that you'd never live OOS - just be content with what you have and not take their comments so personally.

I'm confused - I think Colleen has an excellent point! The OOS debate has been going on here forever.... Why shouldnt Colleen put in her two cents if she doesn't agree?

I think this it all depends on the way you say it. If you say: "I prefer the climate in NY to Florida, therefore I would never live in Florida because of the weather." I don't think anyone would attack you. If you say something like "I would never live south of the mason dixon line because the schools down south totally s*ck." well then people are going to get mad because you are making an ignorant generalization.

On that note, I think that if everyone is just a little respectful of one another, and people don't make broad generalizations about the people and places which they are talking, I think everyone would get along a little bit better.

who is making generalizations in this post Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think the post was just intended to say that an OOS board would be more useful to all. Like Meg said, the mortgage post is great, but it doesn't take into account where you live, which will alter the results drastically. We all know that certain areas homes are cheaper, therefore the mortgage will most likely be cheaper, same goes for taxes.

WOW, what is w/ the animosity? this is a public forum, so people should feel free to openly post their thoughts and opinions even if they differ (and they will) w/ others.

anyway....although i have no comments in re: to the OOS threads as i am happy and content living where i live, i suggest that if it bothers one, then don't view the thread. 99% of the time the thread title clearly defines what the subject of the thread is, so to avoid being offended, just opt to bypass and ignore it.

I didnt read the specific post but if you only want info on LI, you should specify that on the post. for example, if you want to get an idea of the avg mortgage payments on LI only, then ask just that......

I dont know, i just think that another home board to talk about OOS houses would be a waste. This is a Long Island chat board and 90% of what's on here is about LI. If you dont like the other 10%, dont read it.....

Personally I like to look at that homes in other areas so it doesnt bother me when OOS people post pics or information.

Again - if the original poster only wanted it to be about long island, they could have specified that....

Not really sure where I made a generalization. I was just stating where i think the problems arise.

you guys are missing my point. its the Chat Icon Chat Icon from some people that twist my undies Chat Icon

I guess im just sick of reading some people make comments like "why would you live in a shack on LI when you can have a new house in NC Chat Icon " like we are all a bunch of idiots for living here.

and my second point was that even when people ask how much your mortgage is (or whatever it may be) on LI - some people who dont live on LI answer anyway Chat Icon

Yeah - I totally get what you are saying. I agree that it is somewhat annoying because not everyone's top priority is the house itself. For many of us the location, schools, etc are more important than living in a big house OOS. But I feel like people the people that post things like that are usually just trying to justify their own decisions to themselves. almost makes me feel sorry for them sometimes. you know what i mean?

As for the polls and what not - I think that if you want LI specific information you really need to say so in your post because there are enough OOS people to skew the results on any of those.

Sorry your thread got hijacked!

I hope I wasn't one of the guilty ones that upset anyone.....I lived on LI all my life, and would have bought a house there if I could have afforded it.

I know what you all mean about being kinda insulted for your choices....My SIL makes snide little comments about how she could NEVER leave her family like I did.....Like I did it on friggin purpose....So, it can go both ways...Yes, you get alot more "bang for your buck" down here, but there are definite negatives, like in my case where I left my entire family.

no not at all - this isnt directed at anyone in particular per se - but Im glad you brought up the other side - you guys get greif too - thats why an OOS board would help - to talk about stuff like what your SIL is doing!

I 100% agree. Everyone needs to grow up. Who gives a flying $hit what people say about LI. I'm sorry I usually hold my tongue but there are bigger and much more important things to be passionate about. Put your energy into that
