Live Earth, the fate of the Earth, and you.

I watched the Live Earth concert pretty much in it's entirely.

I thought it was great. Though I suspect the message was probably lost on many people.

I watched the coverage on the Sundance channel, and I loved how the interspersed the music sets with film shorts. I thought they were very effective in getting the point across.

anywho, the message that *I* took from it is that the technologies that we have discovered (and come to overuse and take for granted)...all of the things that make our lives easier, are also contributing to making the human races "stay" on the earth that much shorter. Perhaps we will have to "back track" technologically speaking in order to secure time on this planet for our childrens children.

how far back do you think we should "regress" before saying "too bad for you...I like my prepackaged tv dinners, suped up auto, and easy way of living"?

how much of this should be placed in the court of the big companies out there?

how much are YOU, as an individual, willing to change your every day life?

We use the smart lightbulbs by choice, not because Al Gore thinks we should. I watched Duran Duran and Linkin Park because I enjoy their music...not because Al Gore thinks I should.

I honestly think this is a platform for Al Gore to jump into the presidential race.

It's a tough hurdle to change people's convenient way of living. Until the government backs up and supports environmental awareness, it will be difficult to get an 'all hands on deck' revolution from people who are stuck in their ways, like their SUVS and dont recycle.

I thought an excellent move by Bloomberg is to make all taxis hybrids by 2010 and his push to start charging people to come into NYC via cars.

I think a universal approach would be to get world leaders together and begin making decisions. I have driven a hybrid and I am lost as to why all new car models are not made this way.

In terms of what I have given up/contributed: Not much, but....
I recycle
I eat organic to promote and support those local farms
I use organic cleaning supplies
I don't dry clean

While I think this is true to an extent, I also feel that this is his passion in life. Have you watched An Inconvenient Truth? It's SCARY.

And if he chooses to use his celebrity to better the global warming crisis, *I* for one FULLY support him.

hey, it's a better platform than some of the others out there.

sometimes political platforms actually reflect a candidates personal belief.

The whole charging to drive into NYC would be great, as long as there was a better/more efficient mass transit system within the metro/tri-state area.

I agree.

the biggest concern/problem for me is that the mass transit system is already functioning at it's highest capacity

it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, for the system to absorb the additional commuters each day that the driving charge would generate.

one solution would be perhaps that bicycling would be made easier and more convenient. especially for those that live within the city itself.

I would ride my bike to work (or even walk) if my office building provided a place to securely store it throughout the day.

another solution would be to add more express buses to the lines. at least then more people would be carpooling.

DH and I recently went to Vancouver, as the starting point of our Alaskan Cruise. Vancouver was beautiful - it was NYC without the dirt and slime. The city is very clean and pro-earth. Every single garbage can is set for recycling (slot for paper, slot for cans, slot for other) and all buses and taxis are electric cars/hybrid. It made me laugh because on each subway station platform they have 'cleaners' and every time a train stops, the subway cleaners run in, clean the trains, run out, and recycle the trash that people left on the trains.

I hope that NYC can implement something similar, or at least take baby steps...

they are adding one- I am not sure when it will be ready- but having the LIRR go into grand central is a huge step

and we could use a subway below Lex
(thru midtown and the upper east side- that would cut down on cabs)

On the radio they were saying just how much waste was generated by this concert. I wonder how many people who were watching or even at the concert knew (cared) what the concert was about. I am guessing most people were just excited to see such an amazing array of bands.

If Al ran for president, I would be ecstatic. Chat Icon I don't think he will though, because that would make me too happy Chat Icon

Live Earth is hardly Al Gore’s brain child (and neither is saving the planet, for that matter!) – there have been many mass concerts for many different causes before Live Earth. The point behind it is that the deterioration of the planet needs publicity and this is one way to get it. And to that extent, Gore is someone, if ever in the presidential race, will make this a top priority. I don’t see anything wrong with that….

As for what we do…well, I think we’re learning every day what to do to help. Recycling yes, but also trying to avoid buying/using stuff that’s packaged in order to not have to worry about the recycling! Turning off lights/TV/electrical appliances, turning off water while brushing my teeth or in between washing dishes. Taking public transportation (we don’t own a car), using recyclable bags to carry groceries home. Saying no as much as possible when someone asks me if I want a bag. Cutting back on cleaning products (it’s really a amazing how clean you can get some things like mirrors, just by dusting/rubbing them)

While it is a good idea to cut down on car traffic, He is also charging delivery vans and trucks. We also have to take into consideration whose pockets we are hurting. Not the big companies. Small business owners like my dad who will have to pay $8 (I believe) a day to go into the city. He is barely making a profit as it is because of the gas prices. And, it's easy to say "well, raise the price of the product" but it is not that easy. People don't want to pay it.

yeah, I heard that too. I think Bob Geldorf actually said something similar.

but the same could be said about Live Aid, Farm Aid..USA for Africa....all of those things cost money to put on.

it's the publicity they are looking for/need. it's not only the check books of the rich that will solve this problem. you can't BUY back parts of the Ozone layer the way you can buy some starving child a bowl of rice.

and THIS I think it the nitty gritty of it all.

do many of us have the extra buck or two to throw at the local grocer...sure...but, we as a society are "trained" to look for the best deal.

the lowest cost for us may exact the highest cost on the planet.

it's just a matter of how we as a race "ante" up...now with our cash, or later, like the dinosaurs.

People don't need to be inconvenienced though. If every household used one energy efficient lightbulb at least 10 power plants could close their doors. To me, that's not too inconvenient.

For most of us... it's a slow process to transition into environmentally friendly things... but every little bit helps, right?

This is how we play our part:
>>We JUST switched to "green products" (like cleaning stuff)
>>We use energy efficient light bulbs
>>We really only use one car becuase I'm in the city all week relying on MTA or my legs
>>I line dry our clothes rather than using a dryer (not all the time, but at least half of our stuff is line dried)

SO much should be placed on corporations for the waste that they generate. I also think that they should be taxed to high hell instead of getting massive tax breaks, but that's another thread entirely. Chat Icon

I don't know what exactly I'd give up - I'd need a list in front of me because I won't think of it all BUT -

I'd be happy to never drive again. If it's less than 2 miles, DH and I walk it even though we have a car. He walks to school, we walk to run nearly all errands, even for food shopping. I bring my own bag (or two) and I don't have to deal with traffic and parking. I love mass transit - I wish that LI and Westchester had subways/more convenient bus systems.

Same here. Our next car will be a hybrid and we use the eco-friendly light bulbs. I feel that many of these choice are not only healthier for me, DH and DD; but save us money too! Plus, anything I can do to avoid give more $$ to oil companies I will do. I am a HUGE believer in that as a country need to be self-sufficient and NOT dependent on foreign oil (from the middle East or Venezuela especially).

Re: Live Earth, the fate of the Earth, and you.

I think the concert was a great idea ( no matter who's it was) because it is getting people talking about the issue.
As for Al, I loved the book, however he doesn't really practice what he preaches. I'm sure he flew on his private Jet with a handful of people to attend the concert. That to me isn't doing the earth any favors.

I make an effort everyday to start practicing new habits that are better for our planet & my peace of mind.
-we already recycle
-use reusable shopping totes
-I make well laid out car trips for errands
-I drive a very fuel efficient car(and I've had it for 7 years)
-we grow alot of our own organic food
-practice 100% organic yard care
-Very close to being 100% organic in housekeeping
-we borrow books from the library instead of buying
-we buy/sell/trade/giveaway used items on freecycle & craigslist instead of buying new or throwing out
-we have not used any A/C so far this year in our home.
-we compost
-we use very few disposable products like cups or plates
-we do not believe in conspicuous consumption, we use less & buy less

My biggest change I'm trying to make now is my commute, I'm planning to start driving 15 minutes to a train station, then taking the train to my office.

I just read a great book that outlines easy things you can do to change your lifestyle.
Its called
"its easy being green" Crissy Trask

i actually so it so much I bought it because its sort of like a workbook so you can keep track of your progress.
