Man Opens Fire in Las Vegas Casino

LAS VEGAS (July 6) - A man on a walkway over the New York-New York casino floor opened fire on the gamblers below early Friday, wounding three people before he was tackled by a group of off-duty police officers and military personnel, police said.

Police revised their initial report that four people were wounded in the 12:45 a.m. shooting, and they credited bystanders with subduing the gunman before police arrived.

"These are the real heroes. They saw him shooting and tackled him and held him," police Lt. Randy Sutton said. He said the bystanders included three off-duty out-of-town police officers and two military personnel. He did not know their names.

"Amazingly, few people were hurt," Sutton said.

The gunman is believed to be in his early 50s and a Las Vegas resident who was not a hotel employee or guest, said Officer Ramon Denby. He said the man entered the casino from the walkway connecting the New York-New York to the MGM Grand and randomly fired several times at people on the casino floor below.

"It seems like some local guy who snapped and went to the hotel to do it," Denby said.

The casino remained opened, and Denby said investigators were interviewing witnesses.

The 2,000-room casino, which opened in 1997, features a facade replicating the New York City skyline, with a 47-story knockoff of the Empire State Building, a 150-foot Statue of Liberty and a Coney Island-style roller coaster. It is owned by MGM Mirage Inc.

Casino spokeswoman Yvette Monet said its operations had been fully restored Friday morning.

"Guests are being informed that it's business as usual," Monet said.

Re: Man Opens Fire in Las Vegas Casino

I just got back from Vegas on Sunday and NYNY was our favorite place to gamble late night. It's scary to think of that, guess that guy just didn't have any luck. Good thing no one was killed.
