Someone I know lives at home still at 27 years old and her mom always does her laundry. She recently told me that her mom plans to do her boyfriend's laundry too because his mom is moving to Conneticut. Chat Icon

I'm not a mom yet, but I can't imagine ever doing this.

Re: Laundry Poll

I answered 18-21 but I think you should be taught how to do laundry at a much earlier age. My Dad (who does more than 50% of the laundry) showed us how when we were teenagers, and asked us to throw a load in or fold laundry from time to time, but all of our laundry was combined so I never did my "own" laundry until I went away to college. I think it's still the case with my sister who still lives at home at 28, the laundry is pooled together but she's expected to put in loads/fold when needed.

I think at 18-21, you should be doing your own laundry and if you are living at home, you should be pooling it and doing some part of it.

I was taught when I was about 11-12. My stepmom would usually wash the clothes and we would fold and put away. We would never dream of washing one or two of our own things, we had to wait until we had a full load. (Which wouldn't take long with 5 kids and 2 adults.)

When I lived at home just out of college, I pooled my clothes and washed the whole lot. Then took my clothes out and handed the rest to my younger siblings to fold and put away. Chat Icon

Re: Laundry Poll

I didn't do my own laundry. I did laundry, period.

At about 10 or 11 that was included in my chores.

Re: Laundry Poll

my mom always did the laundry for the house it alwasys seemed easier to have towels, jeans, whites, colors washed efficiently that way. If our parents went away my brothers would do the laundry.

Now my dh does the laundry :)

my Mom did our laundry until we left for college

with 3 kids in the house- it was easier for her to just do colors, white, towels, sheets then to make everyone try to do their own I guess

same here, i learned how to do my own in college

Re: Laundry Poll

I was taught to do laundry at 12 years old, but I was expected to do all the laundry - not just my own. I've honestly never understood doing your "own" laundry because I wasn't raised that way.

Re: Laundry Poll

I was taught how to do laundry at 15 - from then, Mom and I were the ones in charge of laundry.

Things were always separated by whites, colors, Dad's work clothes - it was easier that way.

On the other hand, my brother learned how to do laundry when he was 18 because my mother and I were both leaving for a week and he HAD to learn. He's barely done it since to my knowledge.

I started doing my own laundry at 10.

Of course, you have to watch that the kid isn't doing 1 shirt, because she HAS to wear it to a friend's house.

Re: Laundry Poll

I voted 12-15...but I would say even earlier. Perhaps 10-12. Once a child is able to reach the machine and understand how it works...I don't see why they shouldn't do their own laundry. I did.

I started helping around 8-9 but I never fully did my own. I just helped with the family laundry. I started doing just my own in college.

Re: Laundry Poll

I was taught how to do my own laundry at around the age of 12. Over the summer or on breaks, I was expected to do it, but if it was during the school year, my mother would do it. She felt studying was more important than me doing my laundry (but she didn't work 9-5 when i was in school). When I was working full-time, but living at home, if I didn't want to do it, I had to drop it off & pick it up & pay the laundromat to do it.

I think this method was totally fair for us and our situation, as we didn't have a washer/dryer when I was growing up.

12-15.

I didn't do the laundry until I was in college (17 yo). We had to bring it in, separate it. My mom would only wash it. We had to fold everyone's laundry.

Re: Laundry Poll

I was very independant growing up, but my mom helped me with laundry until I moved out. During highschool, I had school, then sports, then work until 10 pm, then homework every night. Weekends was sports games/meets and work. When I had time I would do it, but my mom did it most of the time.
If the kid is lazy and just laying aroud watching tv then that is a differfent story.

Re: Laundry Poll

I was doing my own laundry in junior high school mainly because I did not want my underwear mixed with anyone elses. I had a housekeeper too but there reached a time in my life when I was capable so I did it. I am very surprised when I learn of adults whose parents still do their laundry for them.

When I started giving my mother directions at 13 how to wash my clothing, she told me I was old enough to do it myself and showed me how.

Me too, I think I was 12. I liked it done a certain way, and so I did it myself!
