in a certain area, that was not considered the safest, if it got your "foot in the door?"

What if this was your only job opp right now?

Thanks!

If it was something like Brownsville where there are driveby shootings and lots of crime, no.

I would and I have. For the most part, it was fine (Bed-Stuy and Bushwick, about 8 years ago in definitely non-gentrified areas). I wouldn't want to work in those areas late at night, but during the day it was fine.

I think you need to look around the neighborhood and see if you feel comfortable. Is it busy? Is it desolate? The Bed-Stuy area I worked in was pretty busy during the day, so it felt pretty safe.

Re: Would You Work

I say go for it. I teach in a very unsafe neighborhood and have been doing so for 11 years. I do not stay here past 3:30 on any given day. But i am very careful how I carry myself.

Re: Would You Work

This is the situation:

I have been looking for a guidance counselor job in Palm Beach County and Broward County, Florida.

It is a very different system than up here as there are not separate school districts, but county-wide districts. Meaning, if you were in one school, you could eventually put in a transfer to another school, since you are already an employee of the county.

One of my friends down there is a high school Asst Principal and has been trying to help me get a job. Earlier in the spring, before I attended a job fair, he had gone through the list of county high schools and "rated" them for me.

There is one school in particular that has now posted what looks like two guidance positions. This is one of the schools my friend had told me he'd rather me be unemployed than work at this school - for safety issues, gangs, etc. It's in Pompano Beach, anyone who knows Pompano knows there are very different areas to it.

It's also easy for someone to say "I'd rather be unemployed" when they already have a job and security. It's also about 15 minutes from where we'll be living.

What do you think? I know it's not considered "safe" and I doin't know how I feel about that...

Re: Would You Work

If someone told me they would rather be unemployed than work there then I would take that very seriously especially when they are in the system and know the area.

I would also be asking myself why those 2 positions are open.

Re: Would You Work

I currently work in a unsafe neighborhood - everyone from my parents to my fiance has begged me to look for a different job but i just couldn't pass this up and i love my job!

I just learned a few things VERY quickly:

i can't just pick up a few things after work - i have to go home and shop there

i won't work overtime in the winter when it gets dark out too early.

I pay extra to park in a parking garage instead of looking for parking on the street.

I know every security guard (if not by name then by face) and say hello and good night to all of them. Some of them even notice when I have a few days off or if I am leaving earlier/later than usual!

I always "check" myself before leaving work. . . I turn my ring in, hide my necklace in my shirt, hide my earrings with my hair - make sure nothing is sticking out of my bag.

I always have my keys in hand and ready to go into the car

I carry mace at all times ( i know this won't do anything just makes me feel better )

I always wear some kind of sweater or jacket so i dont call too much attention to myself

i have an old yucky car which i will keep even after i get a new car to take to work!

etc.

I am so glad that I didn't listen to everyone and I took the job because I really like it here! I also make sure I don't tell anyone about anything that happens around here because then the start all over again!

Re: Would You Work

Do you have to work for a certain amount of time before you can transfer? Can you afford to be out of work when you move until you find a more desirable location? I think these are all definite considerations before making a decision.

If you just have to get a job when you move, I would do it. Hopefully either you can transfer within 6 months or maybe even a nearby county will open up.

Good luck!

Re: Would You Work

Thanks for your opinions, ladies. I do not know how long you would have to be in a school before transferring - it's not something I would ask the recruiter.

The reason there are vacancies is that my guess is people are transferring, or maybe retiring, any reason why there are vacancies. There is a lot of movement in the district with teachers always looking to transfer up to better schools.
