Laundry Poll

At what age do you think mom's should stop doing their "children's" laundry. I say child loosely because I am including adult children. I chose specific age ranges because I know of people whose mom's still do their laundry at those ages.

Re: Laundry Poll

my Mom did our laundry until we left for college

with 3 kids in the house- it was easier for her to just do colors, white, towels, sheets then to make everyone try to do their own I guess

Re: Laundry Poll

my mom did my laundry until I left for college- BIG mistake because I went to college NOT knowing how to do laundry- I remember calling her the first time and her walking me through it- and freshman year I was notorious for bringing home bags for her to do....but after freshman year I did it on my own...

It might make a difference that I am an only child and for my high school years we had a cleaning lady who would do some laundry too

ETA: is it bad that there are still some items I own that I don't want to ruin so I might them to my mom to wash? She has magic powers to get stains out- never ruin any clothes...etc...so if needed I wouldl ask her for help still.

once they hit junior high
age 12

anthonys mom took him down to the basement at age 11-12 and said. Meet washer and dryer. meet laundry detergent. She showed him how to do it and said, Have fun and dont ever "make" your wife do your laundry.

I started doing my own laundry at age 12 bc i wanted to act older.
but that being said my mom still does my bros laundry and hes going to be 20 soonChat Icon

For my 18th birthday, my mom bought me a laundry basket Chat Icon Chat Icon

My stepdaughter (who 10) folds her own laundry. DH and I decided if she is going to keep her drawers a mess and fold everything into a ball and stuff it in there and not hang up anything (because it takes too muich time), then we weren't going to waste our time folding it nicely. Re: Laundry Poll

When I started giving my mother directions at 13 how to wash my clothing, she told me I was old enough to do it myself and showed me how.

I LOVE Anthony's mom. If I tell my MIL that DH does laundry, she goes OMG that's amazing. You've taught him so much. Meanwhile, I'm thinking "yea, it would have been nice if you helped me out by teaching him when he live at home throughout his mid-20's" Chat Icon

I said 15-18 but I could see 18 or maybe even 22. But after that I am sorry, that is just ridiculous - an adult can do their own laundry.

Re: Laundry Poll

I was taught at a young age, but my mom looooves laundry. So even though I COULD do it and put clothes in the hamper to do at another time , I'd come home to a pile every day folded on my bed. Man, I miss those days. However, I will make sure to teach my kids young because damn it, I hate this chore more than anything and I will not do it!!!

Re: Laundry Poll

I taught my kids early too! If they didn't help there would be a whole garage floor full of clothes that were dirty! We all had so much stuff going on that we all pitched in.

Re: Laundry Poll

I put 12-15, but I would even say earlier, like 10. I was like 8 when I had to start doing mine and I think it was a great skill to know and use. I never had anyone t oblame but myself if I had nothing to wear.

I started doing my own laundry when I was 11. I have friends now that are married and still have their moms come over to do their wash.Chat Icon
