BF and using a nipple shield....
Has anyone started out using a nipple shield but was able to eventually move DC to just nursing straight from the breast? I could kill the nurse in the hospital who gave me the shield in the first place, rather than taking the time to actually show me how to get DD to latch properly.
She nurses REALLY well with the shield, but I HATE the inconveniance of having to rinse it out and sterilize it. Plus- I just feel like a failure that I'm having such a hard time getting her to latch without it.
When I do feed her without the shield, she'll nurse for a total of 5 minutes at a time, then unlatch, then either refuse to nurse, or she'll just "lick" rather than open wide, or she'll just fall asleep altogether. Either way, she winds up pretty frustrated and crying and I wind up whipping out the trusty shield. It's gotten to the point where I'll allow her to be improperly latched and just suffer through the pain so I don't have to worry about getting her to relatch.
Other than this issue- I've been really lucky with her. She's been an angel. Should I continue just using the shield and getting her to latch sometimes, or should I go cold turkey and throw the damned thing away...

First of all you are not a failure, you are trying to see what works best and doing a great job  I have never used one personally but I would continue to use it and also try without it as well. I would get in touch with Le Leche League or a Lactation consultant ASAP

My friend started with a shield and was able to wean the baby off to just take the breast. I would keep giving her the breast first and then switch if need be. She will probably latch on longer and longer until you can elliminate the shield all together. But don't let her stay on too long if it's causing you too much pain, because that's probably not helping either of you. When she starts to struggle, express some milk so it's on the tip on your nipple and keep teasing her that way until she gets a better latch.

I started with a shield and was sure that she would never get off of it... however, I am happy to announce at 10 weeks she is shield free and has been that way since 7 weeks! So just keep trying and dont lose hope!

I started with a shield - eventually DD was weaned to go right to the breast.
Try wearing the shield during the day to encourage the nipple to stick out - eventually you wont need to use it.

I never used the shield so I don't have any advice about that BUT my DD didn't always have a proper latch. Just be careful letting DD to continue to feed when not latched on properly. I ended up with a huge gouge in my nipple. Thank goodness it didn't get infected but it did bleed & took about a month and half to heal. It killed me to continue to nurse her on that breast but I did to keep up the milk production. It was terrible!!!!
