Re: When you're in another city or country

I must dress well- b/c even in Miami I get asked if I am from Spain or Italy Chat Icon

I have never been mistaken for an American in Europe- I have even have women talking about me and my sister on line in english- thinking we couldn't speak it Chat Icon

but to answer the orginal question- I don't think I own anything that would call out where I am from - and neither does DH- he isn't into sports- so he doesn't wear jersey's or t-shirts

Leave this outfit at home.

You may think that the world loves American tourists...but I wouldn't be so sure!!!

eta...you would be surprised to see how many people all over the world wear Mets and Yankee gear. And Manchester United gear too.

Re: When you're in another city or country

i try to blend with the natives

not like i wear this anyway but i try to avoid:

backpacks/fanny packs

sports clothing

sneakers (unless they are euro fashion/ style and not really meant for sport participation)

hawaiian shirts

huge maps and pointing where i am going etc.

there are just some people who stickout like sore thumbs

i try to blend

Re: When you're in another city or country

I don't think that I wear anything that would indicate that I am from NY or the US.

Traveling outside of the country, I try to dress well and dress up all of the time - skirts, dresses.

In Milan, my family told me that they know an American tourist when they see flip flops on their feet.

that's actually a good point

when i say out of the country - for us, this is more like the carribean, we'll be travelling with Americans for the most part to the islands

I dunno - I'm not ashamed of NY, but at the same time, I don't want to broadcast it - because you never know what kind of crazies you meet

Yeah... sick world we live in. Chat Icon

But I have to say, since 9/11, when people I have met while on vacation, they all give you a look like "awwww I'm sorry about what you went through"

Re: When you're in another city or country

If you are a typical NY'er your accent will give it away. .

I can tell you that I have seen Yankees memorabilia in stores in Ireland.
(Not that you would wear Yankee stuff. just proving it's not just a NY thing)
