What are your thoughts on this?

If you lived in a private house or an apartment building where there were tenants below you, would you allow your children (OVER AGE 9) to run?

Is this a random builing? Does family live there? Either way NO.

No it's a private house. But the question is for an apartment in a building or house with tenants below who are not family.

Re: What are your thoughts on this?

Are you talking about in their own apartment, or just running around the building? If in my own apartment, yes, I'd let my children run around - that's what they do as children, as long as the hours are reasonable (i.e. 7am-8pm for us).

If it's particularly noisy for the people below, it's really not the responsibility of the family above, it's the responsibility of the landlord to install measures to reduce the sound, like room-to-room carpeting.

Yes in their apartment. And if there is carpeting?

If in their own apartment, I wouldn't say it's unreasonable to allow their children to run, but again, as long as it's within reason - my daughter wakes up at 7am and goes to sleep at 8pm, and during those hours, she's definitely running all around the house, and there's no way I could stop her - it's just what children do. But, if it was 2am, then no, it is not appropriate, and I'd make sure she is in bed and understands she cannot run around at 2am. Same for if we lived in a building - I don't think it's appropriate to let your children run around the hallways. But, again, in the confines of your own apartment, it's completely reasonable to allow your children to play, which includes running at times.

If it's unreasonably loud and annoying to the people below, that's again, really the responsibility of the landlord. I don't know what else (s)he could do though if the apartment is fully carpeted.

Oh ok, yeah to a point I mean if they were jumping off furniture and making to much noise then I would control it. You really cant stop kids from being kids.

I'm sure everyone is going to have different opinions, which is fine, but I have to say me personally I would NOT allow it. What are reasonable hours to some, may not be to others, and if the child wants to run, that is why I would take mine to the park.

I guess having lived in apartments for most of my upbringing, we just tend to try to have consideration for people living below us, because one never knows what their work schedule is like (ie: working nights etc).

I think you can't really complain. The woman in the condo above us has a 170 lb dog who GALLOPS throughout the condo making more noise than any child. But what can you do?

I understand what your saying, and I wouldn't have my child jumping off the walls making banging noises all day, but I'm not going to yell at my kid everytime it runs around the appt, the child will feel like it can't do anything! Its hard cause thats all kids do, play and run around, you can't live at the park everyday. KWIM?Chat Icon

I don't think allowing your children to run in the apartment during normal hours, like 7am-8pm is inconsiderate in the least bit. I mean, it's totally expected when you live in a setting in close quarters with other families. Sure, I try to bring my daughter outside and to the park as much as possible, but you don't know exactly what the situation is. What if someone is working from home at the same time? Or, what if a parent is sick? Or doesn't have a car?

Inconsiderate is loud noise at all hours of night, and at weird hours, or blasting your radio so loud that no one can think, or blocking the driveway, etc. Having children run around the apartment - that's just par for the course - normal behaviour.

At 9 years old, the kids should be able to keep the indoor running to a minimum.

Re: What are your thoughts on this?

I don't 'allow' my children to run in the house. They are under 9 (6 and 3). But they do it from time to time. I don't freak out or scream at them - but I do tell them that running is not appropriate inside.

If we lived over someone, it would be the same rule - running is not an appropriate indoor activity because someone might get hurt. I am sure it wouldn't stop them from doing it from time to time... and I am certainly not going to punish them for a couple of lapses. But I would be upset if they continually disobeyed my requests!

Re: What are your thoughts on this?

No. I grew up in an apt., and it was forbidden, out of respect for the people downstairs AND also, so we wouldn't get hurt. Even if there's carpeting, trust me, you hear it. The adults that live upstairs from us I ASSUME are just walking around, not running like maniacs, and we can always tell what room they're in by their footsteps.

I agree with the exception of the toddler stage. I think you would be hard-pressed to stop a 1-2 year old from running around the house & be quiet.

This weekend our neighbors were having company in their backyard. My son was throwing a tantrum on our deck - which means the sound was carrying over right into their backyard. I sent him to his room to finish out his tantrum & told him he needed to have respect for our neighbors. He's 5 & should know better.

I do think that a child over 9 will, on occasion, wrestle around the room.

I can't imagine living in a place where I have to tell my children to be quiet all of the time.

I think from time to time, but not everyday. You need to be considerate to your neighbors, whether they are complainers or not.

i put "from time to time" only because they're kids and you cant stop them sometimes. but i would lay down rules and remind them that there are people who live downstairs and its rude to make so much noise.

Re: What are your thoughts on this?

My parents live in a first floor and had people upstairs. Their little girl would do backflips and gymanstics in the living room. They complained to the family and the family did nothing.

The apartment management put them on notice. I think it's unreasonable to expect your downstairs neighbors to put up with kids doing backflips off of furniture and such. They can go outside..that's an outside activity.

I've lived on second floors before and you have to be aware of how it sounds below. Consideration is key.

Even in the best insulated apartments with carpeting on floors you can hear even low volume. that's ok, but kids jumping around off of furniture is not only dangerous but annoying to everyone.

I've lived on the ground floor of a two family house and the single woman living above us would barrell down the stairs making me want to kill her. This was at 2am!! She would have parties up there till all hrs. She was our landlord's neice. Nuff said.

Re: What are your thoughts on this?

I grew up in an apartment building. We lived on the first floor but obviously we had neighbors right next to us in the other apartment. We were always taught not to run, jump, make loud noises past a certain time. We were always "allowed" to be children but when it came to a certain time, we had to be more quiet and respect others.

We had VERY LOUD neighbors upstairs growing up and it was ridiculous. There is a difference between being children and being obnoxious. They would jump, bang, make the oddest loud noises all the time at all times. Yes children should be children but they should be taught as well. If you live somewhere where you will be bothering others, then the kids need to be taught that. There is nothing wrong with respecting others.
