JESSICA ALBA: DON'T CALL ME A LATINA!!
June 17, 2007. MediaTakeOut.com has learned that Hispanics are up in arms about some comments made by Jessica Alba in a rent issue of Para Todos magazine. It turns out that in the article, Jessica denied her Hispanic heritage.
Below are some quotes from the recent interview. Guess sellouts come in all races, and sizes.
Alba is my last name and I'm proud of that. But that's it. My grandparents were born in California, the same as my parents, and though I may be proud of my last name, I'm American. Throughout my whole life, I've never felt connected to one particular race or heritage, nor did I feel accepted by any. If you break it down, I'm less Latina than Cameron Diaz, whose father is Cuban. But people don't call her Latina because she's blonde.
Here are some of Jessica's other quotes concerning her ethnicity:
"I've got cousins galore. Mexicans just spread all their seeds. And the women just pop them out."
"My grandfather was the only Mexican at his college, the only Hispanic person at work and the only one at the all-white country club. He tried to forget his Mexican roots, because he never wanted his kids to be made to feel different in America. He and my grandmother didn't speak Spanish to their children. Now, as a third-generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose."
"My whole life, when I was growing up, not one race has ever accepted me, ... So I never felt connected or attached to any race specifically. I had a very American upbringing, I feel American, and I don't speak Spanish. So, to say that I'm a Latin actress, OK, but it's not fitting; it would be insincere."
"My grandfather was the only one in our family to go to college. He made a choice not to speak Spanish in the house. He didn't want his kids to be different."
"[Before] I always felt like such an outcast and now I feel like people are more diverse ethnically. I was always self conscience of my puffy lips and darker skin when I was a kid, because I felt like I didn't fit in. And now its mainstream, and color isn't as big of a deal and if anything its better."

I don't see what the big deal is. I think she explained it all very respectfully. The only thing I could see people upset about is the "spreading their seeds" part. But otherwise, she explains why she doesn't relate to that title.

ITA - the spreading the seeds comment was crass, but other than that - I felt that she explained her feelings well.

You can't win for losing in this country. Some people get up in arms if you don't americanize yourself when you come here. Here her family totally has, and people are up in arms because she's not classifying herself as Mexican. And I know people (meaning I personally know people) who would totally hate on her for not speaking Spanish.

Big deal. She's so right about Cameron Diaz. My mom is Cuban, but she's a blonde and fair; people always tell her, "No, you can't be!" It's just silly. Plus, these are Jessica's personal opinions. Who can knock that????

Good for her for saying something. She doesnt have to be catagorized as a Latina if she doesnt want to. Enough with the labels already!!

I agree with the above posters...she should have the choice and freedom to choose what ethinicity she herself associates with...my husband is a fourth generation American and although he acknowledges where he comes from, he doesn't really associate himself with those cultures bc he wasn't raised in them...he considers himself as an American and thats it.

I understand her point of view and frankly, if she doesn't want to be identified as a Latina, believe me, we don't want to embrace her as a Latina but this got under my skin...
I feel as if I have finally cut loose
What exactly did she cut loose from??

I can understand what she's saying, but some of it she didn't word very well. It's like her heritage is a burden on her. You should be proud of where you (as in your ancestors) came from, not try to hide it or be ashamed of it.

Re: JESSICA ALBA: DON'T CALL ME A LATINA!!
I agree with her- and bet some of it was taken out of context it wouldn't be the first time
and 60 years ago- when her grandpa came here- the point was to assimilate- my family did NOT speak italian even in the house- they wanted to be AMERICAN
I feel like that is lost today on 90% of the people who come here- they still hold on to there culture- which is fine- but 50 or 60 years ago- that was NOT an option- there was no press 1 for english, press 2 for spanish

I feel sad for her that she was taught to be ashamed of her heritage. It's one thing to want your grandchildren to assimilate into a culture to fit in, it's an entirely different situation to make them ashamed of who they are.

i'm not latina but if my daughter ever said such thing, i will smack the crap out of her!
my brother and i was the only were the only chinese through our schooling until college. the first year in the states was horrible. my brother was beat up by a boy in his class because he thought my brother knew karate. when i have to use the bathroom, i just walked out of class b/c i didn't know how to say "i need to use the bathroom". my parents told us to study hard and encouraged us to speak as much english as possible. i didn't quite fit in either and we didn't have any asian friends growing up. but never would i said i am american. i am chinese-american. my heritage is chinese and i'm a citizen of america. i am proud my background and my citizenship. the only regret is that i'm lossing some of my speaking language. once i have kids, they are going to language school to learn about different languages and cultures. the world is so big!
you can assimulate into an environment without lossing your culture!!
and what the h e c is she "cutting loose" from what?!
vent over.

I agree. I mean why does one need to completely disassociate themselves from their heritage just because they move to another country? If that were the case, in this country there would be no Saint Patrick's Day, no Columbus Day parade, no Puerto Rican Day.
Anyway, she's just an actress and she's entitled to think whatever she wants. Nobody ever accused her of being a genius.

If she wants to disassociate herself, she has every right to do so, just like we all have the right to immerse ourselves into our ancestry if we desire.
She shouldn't be penalized or looked down upon because she chooses not to embrace herself in her ancestry, there are so many people out there that have no idea where there ancestors even came from!

Re: JESSICA ALBA: DON'T CALL ME A LATINA!!
What's so wrong with wanting to be considered an AMERICAN?
People make me mad
ETS: I just have to add, my family has been in America for God only knows how many generations. And, people can NEVER accept the answer "American" when they ask my nationality. To call myself anything else would be wrong.
People used to come to America for FREEDOM and they were PROUD to be Americans. It took them a long time to come here and they took pride in it. Why is it wrong for a THIRD generation person to feel disassociated from her heritage? Her family felt that they worked hard to come to America and she is proud that her ancestor's hard work paid off in that SHE now, finally is considered a true American.

Re: JESSICA ALBA: DON'T CALL ME A LATINA!!
I'm not mad at her at all! My dad is originally from Italy, and he talked to me in only English, and i am as american as they come, now if he talked to me in italian, and praised italy & italian lifestyle on a every day basis, then i wouldn't be the 100% american that i am. so i agree w/ her.

Being Latino is her background and she's dismissing all of that.
And what is being "true American"?
