Re: I was accused of shoplifting!!!!!
That completely stinks!! Unfortunately, I know all too well how you feel. I had it happen to me at the Bath and Bodyworks in the Tanger Outlets. I used to live near there and so that's where I shopped regularly...
Anyway, long story short, one morning I was in the store (by myself as a matter of fact) looking to return a scent I received as a gift for something else I liked better.
In the middle of my shopping the sales clerk, from the check out desk, yells across the store to me, "now be sure to put back whatever it is you put in your bag. I saw you steal that"
I just looked at her and said are you kidding??? She then said, "you know what I'm talking about".
At that point I proceded to walk over to the counter and show her that the only item I had was what I had brought into the store with me. THANKFULLY it was an old scent that wasn't even in the store anymore (it was the one they do for christmas) so that was my "proof" that I hadn't stolen anything.
I was so offended and embarrassed at the same time. I went off on her and took down her name and title to contact corporate to complain. Fortunately for her, it was an empty threat b/c I never actually followed up, but I should have.
To this day, I still get angry thinking about it.

Re: I was accused of shoplifting!!!!!
OK as someone who has worked in retail for almost 17 years, He had NO right to come up to you in the store that is so WRONG. You are NOT allowed to approach someone for shoplifting until the LEAVE the store. I have found this out the hard way. You have all the rights in the world to make this a big deal with the company if you choose to.

I worked at Burlington and we had off duty cops that worked there. They always told me that you can only say something once the person is out the door. Otherwise they can say they were just 'holding' it until they went to buy it.
I worked in the mall for 5 years (different stores) and every store had that policy. You couldn't do anything, even make a comment to them, until they left the store with the merchandise.
I was once stopped outside of the post office in Roosevelt Field because I set off the metal detector. A guard was waiting for me outside the PO. I forget what he asked me but I was so nervous I just started pulling stuff out of my purse to show him I didn't have anything. I even whipped out my harmonica (don't ask). I was so afraid of being taken to the back room and cavity searched.

I worked in retail for many years as well, and this is true. They have to SEE you put something in your bag (not go by a description someone else tells them!) and you have to actually EXIT the store. You are not shoplifting until you leave the store without paying for something. Otherwise you could just be "holding" it in your bag before paying for it. I would complain to the mangement at the Rite Aid store you were at and if you get no where with them, complain to coporate. They obviously need to train their security guards better.
And the "rent a cop" mentality someone described --- Soooo true!! I used to date one of them.
