My family is totally expressive - hugs, raucous laughter - takes us an hour to say goodbye to one another - and we never get off the phone w/o saying 'i love you.' Dh's family is totally different.

WORLDS apart...............my family would do anything for anyone....DH's family won't......They wouldn't even drive 20 minutes to a restaurant for his B-Day dinner....they said it was too far... ,my family were all present and accounted for.....I feel bad for him...

Chinese IL's vs. Average English/Irish family. In other words, huge differences.

Re: How different is your family compared to your in laws?
Polar opposites. DHs family is very conservative, catholic, traditional etc...
My family is non-traditional, hippy, activists, divorced heretics. But we are a hell of a lot of fun

Re: How different is your family compared to your in laws?
Even though we are from two different cultures/backgrounds- there are many similarities within our families... closeness, family oriented, get togethers often... values, religious beliefs... both sets have been married a long time too...our dad's have similar occupations- and our moms have similar likes/hobbies...
but there are differences as well, and I feel they are definitely cultural...

Re: How different is your family compared to your in laws?
Some things are very different and some things are very similar. Both of our fathers have extremely similar political views....they all get along very well though, so that's good.

Re: How different is your family compared to your in laws?
my family is very loud compared to DH's family. and we are the type that always says "i love you" and always hugs. you can see the love between DH and his family but they dont really express it out loud.
they are the same, however, when it comes to being old fashioned and following old school traditions. they are both also very religious.

Very different! But, both sets are still married, and are both family oriented. Everyone gets along though, which is great!

the same yet different. they both put family first, but I feel like there are things my mom would do for me that my mil would not do for her son. if that makes sense.

There are only a few similarities, for the most part, they're polar opposites.

Re: How different is your family compared to your in laws?
My family and my ILs are like night and day.
My mom's family is all pretty close, my dad's family all keep in touch but it's normal not to hear from each other for pretty long periods of time.
My FIL doens't speak to anyone in his family at all, and my MIL only speaks to her parents and her sister, but she and her sister have a very fake relationship, DH says it's for the sake of their parents.
DH and I have been trying to establish a relationship with his cousins, but it's been difficult.

I would say more similar than not.
Though my family was brought up very strict & computer-driven
DH's family is more outdoorsy and lax

Re: How different is your family compared to your in laws?
total opposites:
my parents are OTB sicilians - very catholic - in their 60s - totally old school.
FILs are in their 40s/early 50s - American - not religious at all. . .and they love to party!
I feel like throwing up every time they have to get together!

Re: How different is your family compared to your in laws?
Their backgrounds are almost identical so we see a lot of similarites. But there are some differences. My dad is a boisterous old school Bronx boy. DH's dad, who also happens to be from the Bronx, is very reserved and soft spoken. Their views are probably not very far apart, though. My mom is very high strung about most things. DH's mom only gets that way over some things.
