Portable AC units

Does anyone have one of these?
They are AC's that do not have to be installed into the wall/window and are some what portable.

Are they any good?

Re: Portable AC units

We have one in our basement and I've worked in offices with them. They work pretty well, the only thing is they do need to be connected to a window or air duct. They're not completely portable

Re: Portable AC units

My grandmother had one (she wanted to have the option of having it in her LR and then wheeling it into her kitchen when she cooked) and it was the worst to deal with (collects water, etc) besides the fact that it did not cool off the room as a regular AC would...and it costs a lot.

Re: Portable AC units

We just bought one last week and started using it and we're very happy!!!

We got ours at Home Depot for $299 for a 8000 BTU.

Also, we have vertical windows, so this is the reason why we went qwith this. It works a lot quietly IMO than a regular A/C unit.

Re: Portable AC units

thanks everyone for your replys...thinking maybe we should just get a window one. I just hate having to install it and hate that it takes up a window.

Re: Portable AC units

The vent still has to go out a window - and the "piping" for the vent must not have any kinks in it to work well. That said, most of them do not work well. All of the salespeople in the stores we went to told us NOT to get the freestanding AC units as most people try to return them. They just (for many reasons) don't work as well as the window ones.

If a window one is completely out of the question, I would get a really good brand and make sure the vent has no kinks, etc. You should be fine.

Re: Portable AC units

My "portable" one is just as good, if not better than the other window ones we have. We have casement windows, and in one room, we have double, but smaller, casements, so I couldn't get a window unit to fit. It also pumps out the water through a tube that runs outside with the exhaust vent. Never need to empty any water. It's more expensive than just a window AC, but I think it's definitely worth it. Plus, some units have a heater built in as well. In hindsight, I would have gotten the AC/heater unit, so we would have a backup heater in the house.

As far as taking up a window, they actually take up a lot less window than a regular window AC. You only need about 4-6 inches of window to pop the exhaust vent out. They come with a filler panel to fill in the rest of the window opening. Most window ACs take 20" or more of the window.

Re: Portable AC units

Ours is okay ... it gets rid of most of the humidity and takes the edge off (the problem is our floor plan is pretty open and we use it in the living room).

It's better than a fan!
