Port Washington was pretty walkable.

I agree. We walk to the pharmacy, grocery and restaurants all the time.

What I really hate -- shopping centers that threaten to tow your car unless you are doing business in that shopping center. I do dry cleaning in one and banking in the one across the street and I must MOVE MY CAR to the other shopping center!! I would say towns that have a "main street." But you have to live within walking distance of the "main street" for it to truly be walkable. And most "main streets" have small shops and restaurants, if you need anything else you need to drive.

Re: Are there any neighborhoods/areas of LI that are "walkable"?

Anything with a "village"-
on the South shore- village is Montauk highway (27A).
I live withing 1/4 mile of:
Ferry to Fire Island
Fancy pants French restaurant
community pool
beach are
town park with concert pavillion
2 other retaurants

within a mile (1/2 mile maybe) is main street, with the train station (LIRR), butcher, CVS, Italian Ice, 2 pizza places, Mexican,. Thai, shoe store, bars, Steak restaurant, Rib joint, bodegas, jewlery shops, salons...
I am not a "walker", but I know it's walkable.
i am what some people may call "lazy". but I dream of walking to town with a baby carrage- it seems so cute in theory.

Great Neck is a definite walking town and has everything in a two block radius.

Even though there isn't an actual "downtown" or "town" area, where I grew up in New Hyde Park, you could walk to just about anything and I regularly did.

This is where I was going to suggest.

Another Holbrook. I have walked to the stores since I was a kid. I love that I can go and get food, my nails done, etc. and not have to take my car. I enjoy walking around the corner in the summertime.

I am in Lynbrook on the Malverne border, I walk all the time to the stores, dry cleaning, pizza, nails, bagels, supermarket, etc... I can get to both areas from my house and it's a really nice walk.

Re: Are there any neighborhoods/areas of LI that are "walkable"?

I think most towns have shops, etc. within walking distance. There are strip malls everywhere - and not the $3 hooker kindChat Icon .
But towns with grocery stores, etc. within walking distance
Massapequa
Babylon
Sayville
Patchogue
Lynbrook
Rockville Centre
Levittown
Wantagh
Hicksville
Plainview

There's more, I just can't think of them.
BTW, I live in Medford and there is a Target across the street, a shopping center with various stores right around the corner and a Stop and Shop about a 10 minute walk away. So even in the "sticks" there's a ton of stuff in walking distance.
