when someone dies suddenly

My moms very good friend just passed away this morning.
VERY unexpected and sudden. Chat Icon

She did have a heart condition and Im sure other related health issues theyve said. My mom spoke to her earlier this week.

and this morning, my sister's cleaning lady called her, (she goes to several peoples homes, including this friend) so she said to my sister "they tell me no come today, she no feel good, maybe at hospital?" (cute accent Chat Icon )
so my sister was confused
Chat Icon Chat Icon

So she called my mom to see if she knew anything. and my mom said Chat Icon she's at the hospital and I havent heard about it ??? Chat Icon Chat Icon
so she called the daughter's house, and she told her the devastating news. Chat Icon

From the bits of the stories that we've heard, they said her veins/arteries in her neck ? were 95 and 85% cloggied Chat Icon and they were going to operate on her heart and couldnt for some reason. (I didnt get the whole story)...

This is just so devastating. She has 2 beautiful granddaughters around 7 and 10. How do children relate to death at this age?
I feel so bad for her hubby.Chat Icon
My mom walked over there for coffee and a chat at least once a week.
They are from the same neighborhood in Italy, the same BLOCK, so they go back, wayy back....

My mom lost another very good friend a good 7 yrs ago, she was the babysitter for the entire world, she was THE grandma in the neighborhood, since she babysat so many kids, they all got attached to her, and she never lived to see her own grandchildren....

Why do things like this happen....Chat Icon

Anna,

I am asking myself this too. We just lost my dad's brother in law last week suddenly too to the heart. It was very sudden and nobody knew of the heart condition. We are all devastated. The shock sometimes makes it harder. I still am trying to comprehend the whole thing. Chat Icon

Children are amazing at this age. They DO need to be told the truth. They NEED to given the oppportunity to see her at the funeral home and hopefully this funeral home is compassionate to children.

We always have a director onhand to talk to the kids when we know they are coming.

Children understand at this age that dead is dead, not sleeping. Being truthful is most important.

FM me if you need any info for them. We have books geared for kids at the funeral home I could get youChat Icon

Re: when someone dies suddenly

Thanks everyone Chat Icon

ValR - Thanks so much for that info. Im going to the wake today.Chat Icon Everyone has strong feelings on death and children, so Im not sure what her decision was. (as far as bringing them).

Theyre a VERY close knit family and nonna was part of their daily lives Chat Icon

My nonno died when I was 11 1/2 and I remember vividly, the wake (in Italy), the funeral, etc. It did give us a sense of peace now that I look back, to see him resting. and at that age, it's a bit surreal, and bit strange, I dont know the right words. I did bawl my eyes out.

and it's amazing how even in 11 1/2 years, someone can have such an impact on their grandchildren's lives. Chat Icon

Val - if you can FM me the titles of the books, I will see if she's interested and I'll get them for the girls.
Have you ever read "The Old ONe" I just read that book to a third grade class this past week! It was about children relating to death. Chat Icon

Thanks again.
