I remember when my firend's mom died when I was 20, I didn't know what to say to her. It took me a while just to call her to see how she was doing.

When my dad died a few months later, I had a few friends who just stopped speaking to me because they didn't know what to say.

So I completely understand how an 11 year old would not know what to say.

I think that his parents are the ones who are responsible for talking to him about this and how to deal with it. Frankly, I think it is also more your DH's responsibility than his mom.
