Becoming a priest gift question

So tomorrow I am going to a big reception for a friend who completed the seminary and is officially a priest.

What the heck do you give for a gift?

It seems to be a formalish reception with wedding like invitations and a cocktail hour. But dont priests take a vow of poverty? So can I give $$??

While nuns take a vow of poverty, I don't believe priests do (I do remember one of our parish priests driving a Mercedez with vanity plates Chat Icon Chat Icon ) so you can give $$. If I'm wrong (but I don't think I am), you can always give actual cash instead of a check, if you're comfortable with that.

Priests in some orders take vows of poverty, not all of them. As long as he is not in one of the particular orders, you can definately give money. If he is going to be a regular diocesean priest, $$ is fine.

I would give him either money or a gift card to someplace he likes. FOr example, if he like golfing get him something related to that.
