Xpost: Birthstory of Giovanni Joseph
Tuesday I went to Madonna for my scheduled amnio to see if his lungs were matured. Since they were not even close last week, I was nervous & afraid that he was still not ready and I’d have to go full-term. Since the previa was an issue, and my cervix was softening, waiting was not a great option. So I was feeling anxious & having heart palpitations since very early Saturday morning. I got dressed & even did full hair & make up with the intention of getting a PG portrait done after my amnio.
Madonna took me right away, as I was Dr. Mackenzie’s first, and we got all prepped & ready for the amnio. Dr Mackenzie stuck the needle, but could not get any fluid up. He was in a good sized pocket, so he was a little concerned. He asked if I was feeling OK, and I told him I could feel the amnio needle (which I could not the previous week) and that I was crampy. He told me to sit tight & got on the sono again. He watched & did this measure thing with the sono & then said that we had to wait a minute to get the fluid again. I asked why & he said just relax & let me get the fluid. Now I am freaking & think something is wrong. A few seconds later he had the fluid & told me the reason why he could not get it the first time is because I was having a contraction & that I needed to be monitored for at least an hour. OK no big deal…..YEAH RIGHT! I was having a contraction every 7 minutes for 45 seconds. W T H?? I did not feel them & had no idea. What I thought was anxiety & heart palpitations were my contractions & I had been having them sporadically since Sat morning!
Off I go to Winthrop, where they tell me it is not hard labor so they will also just monitor me. I get all hooked up & DH comes from work. They seem to be getting weaker, so the hospital decides to admit me for observation only, and think that I will go home tomorrow. (YEAH RIGHT take 2…) 25 minutes later the contractions are off the chart & they are prepping me for my c-section!!! The baby’s HR was dropping a little with each contraction at this point, and they decided that it was time for the baby to come out. We discovered later that he had the cord wrapped around his neck from all of the “rolling” he was doing after the contractions. The section took only 45 minutes & went very smoothly. There was minimal bleeding, and I got to keep my uterus! (There was a possibility of needing a hysterectomy.) They did have to make the incision very low, and it is almost double the length of a normal c-section incision, since they had to go below the placenta & remove it & the baby. According to DH I had 4 hands in me all at the same time…..yikes! DH was there to see it & got to see them take Giovanni out! He even got to cut the cord. Once the baby was out the nurse said, “It’s a Boy!” and I was overflowing with tears. I could not hold him, but they allowed DH to get him very close to my face so that I could see him. I kissed his little wrinkled & slimy face all over & instantly fell in love. I was so happy, and DH was just perfect the whole day. He was amazing in the OR, and he was so great with me in recovery.
I got a little sick from the anesthesia, and stayed in recovery for 6 hours (standard for a previa). The spinal was not so bad once the numbing agent kicked in. The feeling of numb was so strange b/c I could not move my feet or legs, but I was able to arch my back and felt them tugging & pulling to get the baby out. It did not hurt, but it was definitely weird. Oh, and Dr. H was not there, so Dr. Dolisi delivered. He is just as amazing as she is, and I would tell any of Dr. H’s patients that you are in good hands no matter who you are with in that practice.
So that’s the story…Giovanni Joseph was born at 4: 33PM on Tuesday, May 22nd. He was 6 lbs 10 oz & 21 inches long & IN GREAT HEALTH!  Image Attachment(s):
