Phones in Hospital
Never been hospitalized (thankfully!), so I'm clueless about this. You have to pay for a phone, right? And does that include long distance, or should I buy calling cards? I have a lot of OOT family that I'll be calling.

When I delivered at NSUH-Manhasset I had to pay for the phone and when you have it hooked up they will ask you if you want long distance which is another charge.

Mine was free-so was TV (But I am in CT)
The nurses told me as soon as the baby was born and the monitors were out of my room, we could use our cells.

I didn't want to risk them not allowing me to use it, so maybe I'll just buy a small calling card just in case, because I'm sure if it's not included, their long distance is probably $$. Thanks!

I snuck cell phone calls if it wasn't local - obviously not in a room where there were monitors. Otherwise I had people call me.

I had to pay $5/day for the phone and TV. Then it was unlimited use. I just paid for the phone since my cell was dead.

I used my cell phone in Winthrop, and only one nurse yelled at me, I used it IN FRONT OF all the other nurses.
The Phone in the L & D room was free....in the actuall room was like $4 a day and no long distance, Maybe it could be added, I dont know?

You've got to pay for the phone and the TV...At Huntington Hospital I found it easier than my cell..the reception around there is stinky

Keep in mind that cell phones could interfere with other patients monitors and such (or at least that is what they told me when I worked in a hospital) so they might be strict about using the cell.

I'm wondering if I'll be able to charge my cell there or will I have to send it home with DH for charging. I'll be in the hospital longer b/c I am having a C-section.

L&D was free
I paid for phone and TV - it was $38 for 5 nights? We did have our cell phones - but I tried to keep it to a minimum.
If we called outside the town (not even the county) it was considered long distance - so we charged it to our home phone and called only to tell the poeple the number and had them call us from then on.

At huntington, I didnt pay for phone or tv in L&D, but while I was recovering, it was $10 for both

I was at winthrop and in L&D it was free but I had to pay in the room. I used my cellphone in my room and they were fine with it.

I delivered at Southside 2 weeks ago and they told us to use our cell phones and not pay for the room phone. I guess the are where we were was strickly materinty and there were no monitors around to get interferred with. The night I got to the room, the nurse said save your money, just use your cell...

I delivered @ LIJ and you have to pay for phone and TV in you room after delivery. We opted not to. We used our cell phones exclusively (in our room), nurses saw us and never said anything to us.

I will use my cell...I know from experience that they look the other way a lot times if you have one. DH's grandfather is insanely frugal and REFUSES to pay for a phone...last time he was in the hospital, he forgot his charger, he had the nurse call us to bring it to him!
And in reality, the cell phones don't actually interfere with monitors it turns out.

I ignore so many phone calls that everyone I know is used to it!! I will have my cell there, but who knows if I will even keep it on!!!!!!

I had a hospital phone but also used my cell. The nurses never said a word. I don't think they care on the maternity ward. I delivered at Southside!
