Was I wrong - DH/Baby Furniture Dilemma

DH and I have not ordered the furniture yet and I am due from August 6-10th. I had suggested we put it on a credit card, instead of saving up the money because that was going to take longer (we have ALOT of expenses..still paying for our wedding etc.). He didn't want to do it, and said we would order it at the end of THIS month. Well..that's not happening.

I spoke with him earlier and he made a comment about his not getting enough OT and how the mayor of the city he works is looking into cutting it. (he's a police officer). He also mentioned he's relying on the OT money to get the furniture. So I replied sarcastically, "at this point we might as well just get a mattress and consider that her nursery, because it seems we are never going to get her furniture"!! I felt bad..but at the same time..I just don't understand why he doesn't want to put it on the card??? If we have to save it will take us until July!!! I know he likes to pay for alot of things withcash..but to be quite honest..we have 10 weeks left...and we have not done ANYTHING (paint, order furniture) in her room and this is not the time for us to procrastinate!

I'm tired of waiting and want to get it done already.

Was I wrong? Would you be upset?

I can understand why he does not want to put it on the card. You will have a balance and pay interest and pay a lot more than you will need to.

You still have time. You could use the PNP at the beginning too.

I'm due about a week after you - we don't have furniture yet either. If you get a "cheap" enough set - then you won't have as much to pay off. I would put in the card. Better to have it soon, then have nothing when she's born.

When I ordered from BBB we only had to put down half and then pay the balance when it came it. Can you swing that so at least you can order it and then pay the balance when you pick it up?
This way you have time to save for the balance and you can have it ordered so you don't run out of time!

I understand not wanting the interest , but I figure since we have some of the money saved..(not much) the bill will get paid ALOT faster. I no longer have to pay tuition for my sons school (starts up in August) and I can use that money as well. It's just the point of starting to set it up..even if we don't get ALL of the furniture. AT LEAST the crib would help because we are not getting a pack n play.

The problem with BRU is they said "it would be best" to order all 3 pieces together. Yeah..that's ideal if we have the $$ for it..but since we don't "it would be best to order what we can pay for" Chat Icon

Re: Was I wrong - DH/Baby Furniture Dilemma

At BRU, it depends if you're picking it up or if they're going to deliver. You'll have to pay 100% upfront if they are going to deliver + the delivery fee.

Sticky situation though. I'd be with you in the fact that I'd want to order it and get it done, since it can take 10-12 weeks. (Mine did from BRU, but it was a special order). Although, I've seen some girls here on line order from BRU and their furniture came in a week!
Can you call BRU can ask them how long the set you'd like would take? This way, you can talk to your DH and come to an agreement?

If you open their CC, you can also get 10% off of it and the bill will come in a month.

Sad to say, but if your DH is waiting on OT to pay for it and the city might cut the OT, sounds like you'll be paying it off no matter what. I know the city is cracking down, b/c my DH works for the city as well. He's an engineer, but, they've taken away a lot of OT, so, we don't consider that $$ at all since we don't know for sure if we're getting it.

Must be frustrating! hang in there Chat Icon It will get done.

That's the main reason why they "suggest" ordering all 3 pieces at once because the delivery charge is $80 (I think). Worse case..we can pick it up..no problem.

I've read some of the stories on here re: delivery taking long, that's why I'm even MORE worried. They told us 7 days. If that's the case..then great..but I don't want to take any chances.

Originally I wanted to open their CC and I would take on the bill, but he didn't want to. He can be hard headed sometimes.

That is exactly how I feel re: OT. If we wait for that..we'll never get it. Good thing I get OT at my job..and have been working it. Any little bit helps..but I really think this is do-able now with a credit card of course.

I'm going in for the kill later..wish me luck! Chat Icon

I would put a purchase like furniture on a card anyway. You have protection if there are delivery issues. If you can get it paid in July, that is just around the corner and finance charges will be minimal, if any. I would not go much longer than that to pay it off b/c there could be unexpected baby related expenses and you won't want to have a lot of debt in addition to that.

I can understand how you feel but at teh same time to let you exhale a little-babies can use a bassinett if DH insists on paying cash. It will buy you time and probably save a bigger argument or resentment. MY DH hate CC too but thats because we learned our lesson and have some CC debit and refuse to get any more. Sometiems that CC makes you want to spend moreChat Icon

I can understand you because I am the same way I love to have everything done and ready. Is there anyway you can use a 0% APR card. I thought when I registerd at BRU they had some promotions like that in my registry packet. Do you have any tax money coming that you could use?

I can see his point because I am not a fan of credit card debt...neither is my DH..... we try to always maintain no cc debt.....

Also, you do have time after the baby is born, you can use the PNP or the bassinet for the first few months....

Unfortunately we did not register for a PNP or bassinet. We really didn't want them.

Re: Was I wrong - DH/Baby Furniture Dilemma

I will say, BRU was fantastic w/ the delivery! You can schedule that as soon as the furniture is in, if you're going the delivery route!

I do understand your DH's POV. I hate debt and it took me a long time to get rid of all cc debt, but, I've finally done it. I did open the credit card for the furniture... be very aware, they only gave me so much of a credit line and it wouldn't cover the entire price Chat Icon I had put the deposit down and went back to pay the balance, so that didnt' matter.

Good luck! I'm sure your DH is just looking to avoid any addtional payments, and you just want it done. There are other means until you can save, but if you have your sons tuition $ and other funds that you can have in a month to pay it off, maybe he'll agree to order it and you can feel some relief.

Re: Was I wrong - DH/Baby Furniture Dilemma

See, I completely see where you are coming from. I need to be organized and have everything in place wayyy before having this baby. Talk to your husband and explain that this is important to you. That most likey YOU will be the one setting up the furniture and putting everything away - and not HIM, and it will be hard to do with a newborn.

If he still doesn't go for putting it on a card then I would suggest getting the co-sleeper. I know many people that rave about it.

Good luck! Chat Icon
