Port Jeff Station/E. Setauket Residents...
did you guys hear about the 90ft cell phone tower that T-Mobile plans on installing on the grounds of The North Shore Jewish Center? (Old Town Road @ Norwood Ave)
The community is sharply opposed to this, not only for the unknown health risks associated with electro magnetic fields, but for aesthetic reasons, and the possible negative effect on property values. I believe there's a petition going around...has anybody received anything in their mail boxes?

This might be the same one that they proposed putting in Selden a few months ago. Selden and Centereach Civic Associations totally opposed this proposition and I believe, chased them out. I guess they came over to you instead...

Re: Port Jeff Station/E. Setauket Residents...
why in the middle of residential areas? it would make more sense to put it near businesses, so it doesn't affect residential property values in the areas affected.

Re: Port Jeff Station/E. Setauket Residents...
I'm all for fighting this but if you do fight it, please remember when you get poor reception that you traded that off. I am not against fighting a cell tower, but I live in a neighborhood where we get terrible reception. There are people who actively fought against new cell towers and those are the same people who complain about poor reception.
I don't complain specifically about the poor reception. My only frustration is that my friends from other areas don't seem to understand that I don't have the option to use my cell from home or in the immediate area. I posted about that the other day.

there are plenty of industrial & commercial areas in PJS & S Setauket, they should put it there, not in the middle of a neighborhood.

I live in that area and get great cell reception with Verizon. Like above people said, there are pleanty of business areas to put it in, not sandwiched literally between a high school and elem school (and a third school is about a mile away)

I lived about 1.5 miles away from Ward Melville and got great reception
and from my DH parents old house- you could throw a rock- he had T Mobile and got great reception
I don't buy that aurgement- I have never heard anyone in Setuaket complain about cell phone service- and we have had car phone and cell phones since they had cords! (ha remember those)

Cell phone reception diminishes as more poeple buy and own cell phones. I used to get great reception everywhere, too. Most people have noticed more dropped calls, even in Manhattan. Also, the old cell phones were on totally different frequencies. Sure, they can pick better locations that serve the same areas but there could be reasons that other locations can't be done quickly. In my area, the lack of a tower and the number of people trying to get reception are the reasons we have a problem. I have reception in the places that I go where there is no landline and that is what matters to me. I did have to reduce my plan because I could not possibly use my minutes.

South Setauket areas have difficulty with Cingular. Verizon works well throughout.

regardless of all that- I think there are better places to put the tower then where thousands of kids go to school each day
Between ward melville, arrowhead and that elementry school - not to mention all the kids that go to hebrew school at the temple
it's not the right place
Setauket wont even let McDonlads into there town- I can't see way anyone should like a cell tower by kids
I lived there my whole life and so did my DH- and there is already oil tanks- that leaked when I was 10 or 12, and a superfund site b/c some jerk was dumping toxic waste in that industrail area
I lost my Mom to Lymphoma- which is an environmental cancer and 9 out of the 10 people I knew on my block and the block behind me- all have someone in there family with cancer- we were close to the oil leak
so I could really care less about cell phone serivice in the area- I wont even drink the water there

I couldn't care less about cell phone reception in the area. So you use your home phone - or drive further to get a signal if you have to! whatever. North Shore Jewish Center is only doing this for the $$$$$ - ($1,800 per month) "because membership is down" - what about doing annual fundraisers?? look for other solutions, and don't just take the easy way out while sacrificing the community in the process!!
Also, it is said that there will be FOUR substations on the site, and that technicians will have to wear "special suits" when the stations need to be serviced!!! W T F?? and they pose "no health risks"?????? BULL!!!!!!!!!!!

for $1,800 a month they are willing to risk 3 to 4 thousand kids- nice- I am so mad right now- and I don't live there anymore!

Re: Port Jeff Station/E. Setauket Residents...
As I've said, I don't care about cell phone service where I live b/c I have the choice of a landline. However, there are people who will fight the idea of the tower and still complain about the service.
I can tell you that living without great reception is possible, if that even happens where you live. I don't know if there will be any more huge increases in the number of cell phones in use b/c everyone seems to have one by now. In that case, I would expect your reception to remain the same unless there are other technical factors. You could do fine with no new tower.

the community is opposed- the temple is making $$$ off it- it has to do with $$$ not cell service

I believe its MUCH more than that. Like try adding another 0 to that figure per month. I know someone in the business and he said land owners get about 10K a MONTH for renting their land for cell tower use.

maybe for private land owners, but i think houses of worship have limitations on the amount of $$ they can accept for certain things...this being one of them.
besides....whether it's $1,800, or $18,000, it's still a matter of, it does NOT belong in a residential neighborhood, with an Elementary School DIRECTLY across the street.
My neighbor is supposed to be giving me a copy of the letter tonight...I'll get more info from her when she comes over and keep you guys posted.
