When is an appraisal required
What is this exactly and when should this be done? Should it be done before the inspection?

the appraisal is done so that the bank knows it is getting a good deal. they don't want to give you more money than what the house is worth.
it is done once you are in full contract.

no its done after contracts are fully executed. this determines the value of the house.

This is done after the contracts are signed and I believe scheduled by the bank. You will pay for this at closing - if I remember exactly.

we paid for ours up front, that way it wasn't yet another thing added to the closing costs.

The bank will handle the appraisal and is done after contracts are fully executed. The bank will charge you a fee to have an appraisal done.
