breast pump ??
For those that are buying a breast pump...are you planning on buying it before the baby arrives or waiting till after the baby is born?? I know I want to eventually solely pump b/c i already have a 20 month old and it would be easier...also..which pump do you reccomend?? TIA!

I plan on buying after the baby is born.... I will send DH out for it once I am certain I can breastfeed.
They can not be returned and the one I like is 319, so I need to be certain before getting it....

I actually planned on registering for one but was told not to b/c I should rent from the hospital first since it may take a few different brands before you find the right fit and also most insurance does cover it.

I wanted to buy it before baby came too, but after taking a breastfeeding class the other night, the instructor suggested waiting until after you give birth (although I still don't really get why...why should we wait? I want to breastfeed and pump  )
My hospital sells the Medela Pump In Style right there, for like $30 cheaper than BRU, so it's convenient enough to get it after  is born. DH is fantastic and would gladly go to BRU to buy it after baby comes, but imagine the confusion and discomfort for him! I need him at the hospital with me instead!!

I registered for one but did not push for people to buy it.
At the classes I went they tell you to hold on a bit on such an expensive purchase. BF may not be for you, etc.. and once this is open, you cannot return it due to "hygiene" regulations.
So, I plan on renting one from the hospital for 1-2 months to see how it goes. Then if BF is working out, I will buy one.

Hi, I hope this doesn't come across the wrong way, but may I ask why you will find solely pumping to be easier? I'm a breastfeeding mom who has pumped before and it was a real hassle for me.
You have to take the time to pump, then clean and sterilize the pump parts when you're finished, then take more time to sit down and give the baby the bottle. Also consider the time it's going to take to warm the bottles of milk while the baby waits for it. Is someone else going to always be there to tend to the baby and older child while you're pumping so you're not disturbed? Unless I need to be away from my daughter, I find it easier to just nurse the her "straight from the tap" and be done with it.
Again, I hope this isn't coming across wrong. I thought pumping was going to be great until I was actually doing it and realized how time consuming it was. I felt like my life was a constant cycle of pumping, washing bottles/pump parts, heating bottles and feeding baby. By the time the baby was finished feeding, it was time to pump again!
If you choose to solely pump and it is what works for you and your family, that is great! And you certainly have more patience than I do! hehe. I wish you the best in whatever you decide to do.

Oh yea, about the pump recommendations.... If you're going to be pumping often, I would recommend the Medela Pump In Style because it's a very good quality double electric pump. If you want something small for pumping once in a while, I really like the Avent Isis manual pump. Once I got down a good pumping technique, I found it worked just as well as the PIS, maybe even better. I've never personally used any of the Evenflo pumps, but I've heard nothing but bad reviews from anyone who's ever tried them. Hope that helps!

I was going to rent one first, but then the thought of renting a pump that had touched other breasts kind of grossed me out....so I bought the "Ameda Puely Yours Pump.
Baby Bargians highly recommended it, and it got great reviews. And it's about $100 cheaper than the Medela, so I went for it.

I have the Medala Pump in Style--I read that you should have it with you, even in the early days-since if the baby doesnt take to your breast right away, you can still actively pump and therefore produce more milk

I can't speak for Michelle - but I think it's the fact that all babies (and boobs) are different. For me it worked out much better and I saved time. My DS was a very lazy eater and I would sit there for 1+ hour. With pumping it was never more than 20 minutes and then DH could feed and I could do something else.
I didn't buy mine right away. About a week after I came home, I sent DH out for a hand pump (avent isis) and after another few weeks I bought the Medela PISA.
For those renting pumps or considering it - nothing that touched someone else touches you - you get your own new horns and tubes, etc. The milk doesn't go into the machine at all - it only gets sucked into the top of the horn and then it drops into the bottle/bag

Really? How can you find out if they will cover it (usually if I call & ask my ins co they say "no" & then I find out from someone else that they will.....)

I bought it after DD was born. I used it 6 times.
I had the Medela Pump In Style.
Even then i think i bought it too early. I HATED pumping, but loved nursing.
IMO I wouldn't buy it before hand.

I always check the benefits on my own-do you have a book?
My insurance only covers if baby is in NICU for a max of 10 days.
