I was planning on:
Grape tomatoes (I WILL find them this year!) Beefsteak tomatoes different lettuces 1 eggplant 1 zucchini (those suckers get BIG) peppers basil maybe strawberries maybe cucumbers
and marigolds!
Where do you get your plants? I am giving up on the seed nonsense!!!

Re: Calling all gardeners, what are you putting in yours this year?
I'm not adding any new plants this year, we're saving for a house.
But I do have lilies and tulips from last year coming up. I get my plants from Cipriano nursery in East Meadow usually.

Re: Calling all gardeners, what are you putting in yours this year?
we usually do
cherry or grape tomato beefsteak tomato roma tomato green pepper hot pepper parsley dill basil mint
and a slew of flowers impatience (sp?) roses tulips
we get them from Home Depot. They're not the "greatest" but priced reasonably and taste just as good as from the nursery
eta: we can't forget the grape vine that has been growing here forever. It's what makes an Armenian home complete!!!
edit again to add:
Oh, and we always plant marigolds inbetween the veggie plants to keep the critters away. Something about the scent of those flowers keep them away

A note on the strawberries: My parents have a small patch and they ALWAYS get eaten by the squirrels before they can pick them.

Re: Calling all gardeners, what are you putting in yours this year?
Hmm squirrels.
What if you grow the strawberries in a pot with a chicken wire cage around it?
Doesn't look great, but at least you'll be able to enjoy the fruits (HA!) of your labor.

It's been happening for years. My dad likes the leaves as ground cover now. Go figure.
They probably feel bad for the squirrels.

Re: Calling all gardeners, what are you putting in yours this year?
I used to put things they like in my birdfeeders like sunflower seeds, so they wouldn't eat my tulip bulbs.
I never knew how crafty they were till I became an outdoors gardener!

Re: Calling all gardeners, what are you putting in yours this year?
We're building 4, 4x4 cedar boxes for:
- cherry tomatoes (2 plants) - plum tomtoes (2 plants) - big boy tomatoes (2 plants)
- cucumbers (1 plant) - bell pepper (1 plant) - lettuce (not sure which type yet) - bush beans (1 plant)
- basil - oregano - parsley - dill (though I haven't had any luck in the past with growing dill) - cilantro
I already have 3 lavendar bushes...and about 12 rose bushes in the back and I think 6 in the front as well as Peonies, Lilacs & Lily of the Valley.
We'll add marigolds and petunias to the veggie garden.
eta: we usually buy from Main St Nursery in Huntington...sometimes we'll hit Paul's in ENPT...and we may meander over to Martin Viette.

Re: Calling all gardeners, what are you planting this year?
We're hoping to start our garden this year...we may wait until next year depending on how busy we get with projects.
I'd like to plant... Chives Basil (LOTS of it!) Rosemary Oregano
Tomatoes - cherry & beefsteak Cucumbers Peppers - though since I moved to LI I have the WORST luck Potatoes Green Beans Eggplant
Flowers...not sure yet...I'm discovering so many BEAUTIFUL trees & plants in our yard...the previous homeowner ROCKS! I do know I plan on planting a lot of impatience.
Currently in our yard budding & blooming are... Forsythia Rhododendron HUGE cherry blossom treeS (everyday I look I see more!) Weeping cherry blossom tree Dogwood Azaleas Another couple of bushes related to the Azalea & Rhododendron family... Peonies Hydrangeas Hostas Lillies Irises Dafodils Tulips Crocus Narcissuses Hyacinth Flowers There's more that I'm trying to figure out what they are...
Oh...and we have these two trees that hold up a hammock. The previous owner left it for us... I'd LOVE to plant lavendar around there....does anyone have any experience growing lavendar...tips?

Oh wow. You got some great ready-made garden there! I surprised they left all of it for you. Not that you could dig all that up in the winter, but I fully plan on taking most of my planted flowers with me.
I've always wanted to grow lavender! I've heard they do best with a lot of sun, so maybe under the trees might not be a great place for them.
STILL waiting for pics. You better be taking pics of all this beautiful landscaping too!

Re: Calling all gardeners, what are you planting this year?
I have lavendar in my back yard and we do NOTHING to it!! It is there all year, blooms in the spring with just a little watering now and then. It gets full sun.

- cilantro
We'll add marigolds and petunias to the veggie garden.
Don't know if you know it, but the seeds that grow on the cilantro are coriander seeds. Grind them up for a delish spice that we use to season lamb
And I didn't know about the petunias in the garden, only the marigolds. Thanks for the tip

Re: Calling all gardeners, what are you planting this year?
lavendar is really easy to grow - it only needs full sun. i dont even water mine that often and it grows fine. under a tree probably not the best place for it. there are varieties that take partial sun, but if you're talking full shade probably wont work.
