Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

Do you know EXACTLY (not guessing, but they told you) how much your friends make???

Is it something you openly discuss? If one of my friends (a close one) asked me, I would probably tell them. But thats never happened, so I never felt the need to tell someone how much $$ I make - if I get a raise, i'll say "woo hoo I got a nice raise today" but never "I got a $10k raise" or whatever.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

With my very close friends - they know exactly how much I make (including base, bonus, OT, etc.) and vice-versa.

With general friends - they know an "approximation" and vice versa.

I give a vague answer unless there is a specific reason for asking...ie they're in the same field, etc.

eta. I've had some friends that have volunteered what they make.

With one friends we give general answers because we have the same job, but at different companies. Also, I feel comfortable talking to her about it because we make in the same ballpark. But with anyone else, I would NEVER even give them a vague answer and if someone asked me i would be really put off. I dont even like to tell my mother or in-laws what we make.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

Nope I don't discuss money with friends (if I do it is just in a vague general comment) I really don't see how it has anything to do with my friendships...

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

I used to know more or less what several of my friends made but not anymore. It was relevant at the time, but it isn't any longer. I think several of my friends know what I make because I recently changed jobs so I may have told them if they asked how much I'm making.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

since we are all in the same insdustry and started out together- we dicuss it when it comes up- new jobs, promotions etc- we all know we started at the same

while I can't recall exactly how much my BF makes- I would have no problem asking her

I have older friends who are more like mentors- who have helped me along the way - and would tell me what they were/are making at there level

and I have a younger friend- who I am like a mentor too- and I know what she is making- and guided her to what would be fair at her level

however- my new friends at my current job- I would never ask them what they are making

and I would never ask what anyone's husband makes

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

I don't know the exact amount of money my friends make nor have I ever asked them.

I recently had a very close friend ask me how much I made and I told her. I felt put on the spot and she is a very close friend so I didn't mind telling her, but afterwards, I regretted it.

But it's not that hard to figure out approximately what I make because many law firms publish their starting salaries.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

The only time I ever knew what a friend was making it was because I was in her house with her when she got her first job offer out of law school. She almost choked on her coffeeChat Icon (b/c it was so good)

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

I guess it hasnt come up for me because none of my friends are in my industry. any friends I have I currently work with, and its very taboo around here to know what your co-workers make (and I dont wanna know either!)

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

No one knows how much we make or have or any other financial information - in my opinion - there is no reason for them to know

About getting raises - DH doesn't discuss it - cause he doesn't know what it will be. He is in Sales - a raise to him is getting another account to call on.
He might say I got a raise - but that is as far as it goes.

I don't ask because I don't care. Most of my friends aren't in the same industry that I am and honestly how does me knowing my friend's salary benefit me - oh yeah it doesn't.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

My good friends know exactly how much I make, especially because some of us work together and we like to compare notes. But with others, I just give a ballpark figure. I am not really all that secretive about it.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

recently I have gone back to work and a couple of friends have flat out asked me and My DH TOLD SOME TOO he has a big mouth. I know in a range what my friends make and that is fine. I Think its rude to flat out ask someone if it was irrelavent to their lives other that being nosy. My Bil and SIl know what I make because my BIL is a mortgage broker and did our mortgage. I kinda hate that they have this inside info on me but oh well it was either he sees my info or I go with another broker and pay higher fees.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

I have one friend who I talk to pretty openly about this, and the honesty goes both ways. We have another friend who does our taxes, so obviously he knows in an even more detailed way what we make.

With everyone else, I am vague if I am asked. It's a little too nosy of a question, IMO.

I know what one of my close friends makes, and I think I told her awhile ago about mine.....other than that, I don't khow anyone else's....however, if they would ask me, I would tell them, it really doesn't bother me to discuss it.

Re: Spinoff to Well Paying Jobs

I don't ask and I don't tell. It's my business.

There are a few very close friends who I might tell if they asked, but that's b/c they used to know what I made years ago. Besides, they make more than me now, so maybe they'd take pity on me. Chat Icon

However, I've found that people tend to make judgements about my lifestyle and my living expenses. My close friends don't do this, but I have known other people to do so, that's why I'm close-mouthed about it now.

It's discussed with friends b/c we talk about expenses/savings, etc., but for the most part, we're all in the same income bracket.

We don't show them spreadsheets Chat Icon, but my DH's income changes every month/year. He has a base salary, but the commissions vary so it's not like I can say he makes XYZ a year.

I don't ask and I don't tell. I do have one friend who is very "keeping up with the Jones'" and she tries to get the info out of us. It's annoying.

I have talked about it with other colleagues in the industry though. Usually when one of us is looking for a new job.
