Two Rescued After Falling Off Cruise Ship
NEW ORLEANS (March 25) - A man and a woman fell overboard from a cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico early Sunday, but both were rescued after a four-hour search and appeared to be in good condition, a cruise line spokeswoman said.
The 22-year-old man and 20-year-old woman fell 50 to 60 feet from a cabin balcony, said Julie Benson, spokeswoman for Princess Cruises.
She said the cruise line did not know how they fell overboard. Their ship, Princess Cruise 's Grand Princess, was about 150 miles off the coast of Galveston, Texas, at the time.
The captain turned the ship around after friends of the man and woman notified the crew at about 1:30 a.m. CDT that they had gone overboard, Benson said. The ship 's crew used high-powered spotlights and rescue boats in the search. One passenger was rescued by the ship 's boats at 5:30 a.m. and the other at 6 a.m., according to a statement by the cruise line.
The search was aided by the Coast Guard, said Lt. j.g. Jillian Lamb at the District 8 Command Center. A nearby cruise ship also offered assistance, she said.
The man and woman, whom the cruise line declined to name, were examined by the ship 's medical staff.
"They appear to be in satisfactory condition and we hope that no further medical attention will be needed," Benson said.
Grand Princess was carrying 2,783 passengers on a seven-day tour of the western Caribbean.

I seriously would have $hit myself falling from that height into the ocean and watching the ship sail away...

Honestly, I think you really have to almost "TRY" to fall overboard.
Guarantee they were drunk or doing something they weren't supposed to be doing.
All the protectors on the sides are mid-chest height for me, I would have to climb up and over to fall overboard.

I vote for totally drunk! Ever notice how no one ever "falls overboard" at like 2pm. It's always in the middle of night - usually after a night of drinking.

Nah, there is always that shrinkage factor. On the other hand, what else are you going to do while you're treading water for hours.

Trust me, I have been on 14 cruises. You have to be an idiot to fall overboard. They where probably drunk and climbing on the railings. Cruises are wonderful, don't let this stop you.
I actually have been on that ship.

I have been on about 15 cruises over the past 10-15 years and I promise the only way to fall overboard is if you are an idiot. These people HAVE to be doing something incredibly stupid, drunk or purposefully jumping. The railings are high and you can't just fall over them without making a real effort (i.e. sitting on, standing on a chair and really leaning over or standing on the railings) I think it is rare to see one from Princess - they usually fall off Carnival. Alcohol is usually involved in most all of them unless they were purposefully jumping.
