Re: decorating on a budget???

I'm "decorating challenged" but have to say I'm proud of my living room. I love and live at:

TJ Maxx
Target (the clearance section and that section alone)
Home Goods (need to go!!)
Walmart
Bed Bath & Beyond

I'm lucky in that my BIL will paint whatever I want for free (and usually provides paint).

What I do is pick a color scheme...my LR is browns, beiges, white, golds...all warm and I "pull" from the green in the kitchen since it's an OFP. Then I buy things that I like in that scheme...curtains, furniture, painting, vase, etc. I don't imitate any designs because I tend to go with my "likes" and am horrible at this.

I tend to use a lot of flowers and candles, both are cheap and look nice and elegant/cozy. I also only buy on sale, unless it's a piece I really want...and then I find the cheapest one similar.

I go for warmth/comfort/cozy when decorating.

For any decorative accents, I usually get really nice things at Pier 1 and Target. I always set a budget, and don't go over it. Also, they both have great sales.

I look at Restoration Hardware, Ballard Designs, and Pottery Barn catalogs for inspiration, then head to the stored above to try and re-create the look much cheaper.

DH finds furniture people are throwing out on the streets of Brooklyn.

A chair. A table. Free. He repaints sometimes.

Perfectly good. I guess people get tired of stuff, or don't want to move with a lot of stuff.

Re: decorating on a budget???

Also a lot can be done with decorative treatments. In my home I have a paper bag wall-looks like leather, venetian plaster and paint effects. I also buy most of my stuff at TJ Maxx, Marshalls and sometimes online. To find colors I usually look at magazines or I find a piece of material i like and pull colors from there. Right now I bought a blanket with camel, dk brown and teal blus color that I am going to use as a basis to redecorate my den.

Heres an old Post

Do only one room at a time, dont be so quick to purchase pieces and charge them just because you have to fill space

I bought some great theater chairs in leather on craigslist, Tag sales are a great way to find furniture, rugs etc, especially in high end neighborhoods

Take your time, you will one day have a full decorated house

Re: decorating on a budget???

i would also check out craigslist, ebay and see if you can hit garage sales in the summer. just because someone else doesn't want it doesn't mean it won't be perfect for you!

I have also found some great things at target.
