Discussion....Breast feeding at your desk in the office

I am not posting this to stir any pots, just something I'd like to get your ladies opinions on.

I have a girl (she's 22) in my office that has a 4 month old son. She works part time and when she is there during the week she used to bring her husband and son into the office. She would sit at her desk and breast feed her kid.

She was spoken too about this.

Well I get told today by a collegue that worked on Saturday that she came in and their she was at her desk breast feeding her kid with her husband next to her. Everyone is starting to get annoyed and uncomfortable. Especially the 18 year old boy that came in on Saturday. They all feel that she can go into the ladies room to do this.

I sent my boss an email letting him know how people were coming up to me about it.

So your thoughts about the whole breast feeding at your desk....

I don't think it's appropriate to do that at your desk in the workplace!! Especially since there is somewhere else she can go!

Is there any place private besides the bathroom she can use? I have had to find empty offices and turn them into the official pump room at my old company...just for privacy. The women felt the bathroom was too germy.

Why is her baby at work with her? Just visiting or something?

i think its inappropriate to bf at her desk with everyone in the office. find an office, that's empty, and use that. i understand about the bathroms, but there are alternatives.

I do not think that this is approrpriate. I think that she should find a more private place to do this.

Ive been called out before but I don't care... Im not all about breast feeding in public so breast feeding in the office is a no go in my book!

I don't think its inappropriate. Is it possible for her to use an empty office for more privacy? If it was me, I would definitely not use the bathroom.

Totally inappropriate in an office atmosphere. If she doesn't want to use the bathroom, then she should find an empty office. She needs lessons in office etiquette. Maybe your boss could revise the office handbook and add "breastfeeding in the office will not be tolerated". While some may find it "natural and normal", others are uncomfortable. Your boss needs to sit her down again and, in no uncertain terms, tell her how her behavior is unsuitable in an office.

All the offices are locked on Saturday, but I am sure my boss could make special arrangements for her with one of the offices that is not being used.

I agree I think it's inappropriate at her desk especially with other people at the office.

Well, I don't think she should have to BF him in the bathroom.

Does the husband bring the baby in so he could eat? Where is her desk, right in the front?

Legally in NY you can BF wherever you are, so she does have the right although I"m not sure about BFing while you're working.

I mean, technically, she can bf wherever she wants. Her son needs to eat, but I'm sorry, your desk is not the place to do it. I wouldn't even eat at a desk!

Thats why God created bottles...squeeze some breastmilk in it slap a nipple on it and Dad is good to go with feeding the baby

Not at her desk. Maybe your boss could arrange an office for her. I would not want to breast feed in a bathrom. Would you want to eat in a bathroom?

I've suggested this before and was told something about it being confusing to a child and they should only feed from the breast
