SPINOFF: Do you think that the punsihment for doing any crime

Is justice or a way to try & prevent crimes. For example, we have a post about the driver who knowingly drove drunk & killed 2 people. His sentence is 18 to life. A bunch of people (myself included) have voiced that they think the sentence was not harsh enough. While I agree, I am wondering what good (honestly, not sarcastically) do we think a longer sentence will do? Is it to make him realize the severity of what he has done; keep him off the streets & out of harm of society; to rehabilitate him?

I can't imagine he doesn't know the severity of the crime now that he's sober.

For me, the punishment is a way to prevent future crimes. Hopefully the next time people consider driving drunk, this sentence will ring in their heads before they get behind a wheel.

i believe each should be looked at as a case by case basis. i mean, there are accidents and there is reckless endangerment. i think most of us, myself included, never know all the facts and are quick to judge based on a 2 paragraph article.

I was using it as an example. I mean for any crime/conviction.

i know, i read the question wrong. i think the punisment is a deterrent, but i don't necessariy think harsher sentences would mean less crime overall.

For me, the punishment is a way to prevent future crimes. Hopefully the next time people consider driving drunk, this sentence will ring in their heads before they get behind a wheel.

I agree. It's to keep the people committing these crimes off the street and hopefully setting an example for others to prevent them from comitting the same crime.

while in theory that's a good thought - it's not reality

cold blooded murderers don't care

and drunk drivers are so thought impaired by the time they get behind the wheel, they're not thinking consequences

I agree with this. I think sometimes people reflect back on the crime and it may be a deterrent for that particular person to not break the law again, but I don't think the example deters others from committing the same crime.

I think the sentencing is more about punishing that particular person for their crime.

I think that with our justice system by the time a person is sentenced they are somewhat removed from the crime. I also think that thjese types of things are supposed to be a deterrent for other which I think is quite foolish. I tend to think a punishment more fitting for the crime would be more effective (combinesd with jail time)such as:
Having to work with ambulance crews handling drunk driving accidents

I agree.

Speaking in general terms there are two types of crimes:

Intentional & accidental.

For those who commit any crime intentionally, they are either fully aware of what they are doing or they are insane. Therefore the punishment probably doesn't matter to them.

For those who do it accidentally it usually happens before they have think about consequences.

I have to agree.

I don't think when people drink they think of all of the past drunk driving accidents that have occurred and the repercussions.

Also, like the Capt. mentioned, cold blooded murders don't care. Consequences don't mean anything to these people.

Exactly. So why do we keep them rotting in jail and paying for them??? For these people, they should get sentenced to death the night they are convicted. Easier said than done, i know...
