Re: Opinions on Huntington Hospital
My mom was in the hospital, last summer for almost a month. The nurses were great, helped her with everything. Dr.s answered questions and overall I think its a good hospital. I know you said aside from maternity (which BTW they are fantastic, I delivered my son 6 weeks ago).. My FIL was in and my grandmother as well. I really heard no complaints. Hope this helps a little.

Re: Opinions on Huntington Hospital
I ended up at the ER back in December for kidney stones and I was really impressed with the staff & service. Very friendly and a smooth operation (as in the way they run things.)
(I was also really impressed with the maternity ward when I had DD.)

I'm not trying to start drama, but why make a statement like that w/o a reason? You should state your experience to validate your statement. (Just my .02 )

Huntington is considered a top notch Hospital according to JCAHO, it scored higher than Stony Brook, Good Sam, Southside, St Catherines, St Charles and Mather, they had no citations ont heir review on the ENTIRE hospital.

I'm with emilain. When I worked at a nursing facility, we had patients & residents (along with their guarantors) specifically write that they were to go to HH if needed.

I've only had great experiences with them.
My dad was there after having a heart attack, I've delivered my children there, ER was always good.

Good to hear! I've switched to The Huntington Medical Group and all of my doctors are affiliated with Huntington. I will be delivering my baby there in October. My ob. called it a little hidden jewel.
I've heard numerous people (including family) state how wonderful the maternity ward is but I've also spoken with numerous nurses and others who say the hospital in general isn't very good. Just goes to show, everyone has a different experience.

I think you will be pleased, most of the employees (especially the docs) live right in the community so they take great pride in the hospital, there are literally generations of employees that work there (I know currently of a grandmother, mother and daughter who are all nurses there!!). I must add, if I had an emergecny with my kids ( as long as it was not immediate help needed), I would go right to North shore since they have a Peds ER, Huntington has on-call peds but not a 24 hr Peds set-up. If it were stitches or something like that I would bring my kids there, but if it seemed something more serious, I would go to an ER staffed with Peds specialists and equiptment.

Re: Opinions on Huntington Hospital
Personally, I've never had a bad experience there (had an ER contact, and in for 3 days with apendicitis).
My step-mother was recently in for several weeks for a serious back surgery, and had a horrible experience with the nursing staff. She (and my dad) were very unhappy with the care. I had cautioned them to go to NSUH at Manhasset for such a serious procedure, but they liked their doctors at HH. They'd choose differently if they had it to do over again.

Huntington has always been great for me. DH, my father and I have all ended up in the ER and they have been great.
I haven't had any surgery expereince though - but I haven't heard any horror stories about it.

sorry I logged off for a bit, I didn't want to start drama by going into a story, I figured if more info was wanted I'd get an fm....here's the deal on HH...I've been told by my fireman friends that the ER should be avoided at ALL costs, this comes from thier experience with the ambulances...and ona personal note-the oncology unit missed two tumors in my friends abdomin...they did a sonogram, thought it was one, opened him up, and found 3....two of which were too big to remove...they closed him back up and started him on a course of radiation, at which time he immediately switched out to go to sloan....again...that's only three different departments that I have any first hand knowledge of....the maternity ward is very good (as per my friend Sarah)...the ER and oncology units are not (as per some very close friends)....
again, this is not to say that there aren't some good doctors there, I just know for me, I would go elsewhere....

Re: Opinions on Huntington Hospital
I've been there for 2 foot surgeries, cardiac issues, and maternity. Their women's center is terrific.
I thought they were terrific. I do know that before it became part of North Shore, it was not considered a good hospital by friends. (keeping in mind I've lived in this area for over 35 years).
They have significantly revamped their procedures, renovated, etc.
My only bad experience was when I was told to hold my daughter down for a spinal tap & they did not have a small enough needle available in the ER. After the 6th try, I told them to forget it. They had to admit her because they couldn't confirm the existence of meningitis.

Re: Opinions on Huntington Hospital
my immediate family (me included) has been through 6 surgeries there in the past 4 years, and it seems to be getting better and better every time. The nurses are wonderful - the anestesiologist (sp?) was sooooo nice - and I'll never go to St. Catherine's again.
The HH ER is great- very thorough, fast, and CLEAN. St. Catherine's is not only dirty and slow, they're just a mess. My Dad was in a terrible accident...he was xrayed, scanned, what have you, and was sent home with "a concussion" and a neck brace.
Turns out that he BROKE HIS NECK, tore his shoulder ligaments to pieces, and shattered his patella...all 3 were totally missed by St. Catherine's ER. He was only diagnosed after seeing specialists when his pain didn't dissipate after a few weeks.

Re: Opinions on Huntington Hospital
Vinny spent four days there and one day in the ER...
He was in a bad car accident but there were no major injuries-- just very, very sore and needed rest and time to heal-- plus, they wanted to rule out internal injuries.
He had a good experience. The Hospital was very clean and the Nursing staff was nice. His Doctor didn't have the best personality but he knew what he was doing VERY WELL.
Overall, it was very good... Aside from the whole "in a lot of pain" part

This is why I also said other than the ER. I was an EMT for many years and going to the ER in Huntington Hospital was never a good experience. We would come in with a patient on the stretcher and it would take FOREVER to get the patien to a bed. They nurses there would literally look right through us. I mean they would look at us and didn't even at like we existed. We would have to ask time and time again where we could put our patient, it didn't matter what the severity of the case was. I think the drs and nurses in the hospital are great, I had a friend who worked there and she loved it. If you have to go to the ER though I would try to avoid it.

I agree. The doctors in the ER are not interested in diagnosing anything. However, I had two surgical procedures there and was very happy.

I think you just got an "off" day, because there was a write up about the Huntington Hospital ER docs in New York Magazine about their quality of care, sorry your expereince was different The nurses in the ER can often be "floaters" so that can account for other issues (not trained in emergency medicine, not where they want to be (it is high stress). not trained in trauma, etc)
