Its unbelievable - that the housing prices here are so high that we are forced to live with parents in our 20's and 30's, to never eat out, etc. all to save in a lot of cases only 10%!!

Sooooooooo true!!!

Re: How long did it take you

We saved for about 2 years while we were engaged to pay for our wedding and our downpayment. We both worked 2 jobs and we were both living at home. I am SO GLAD I started to save young (age21-22), because I wouldnt want to work 2 jobs and live with my parents now to save. We closed 2 weeks after returning from our honeymoon and the gifts from our wedding were used to start our renovations.

No kidding - this is what we are doing at the moment. We are going to put down 10% that has taken us just about 18 months to save. We just have to find the house!

I have a question-
Is there a big difference in the mortgage rates if you put down 10%?

Because form what I can figure, the difference in payment from putting down 10% and $5000 on a $40K house, is $200 a month.
I would rather have that $35K in the bank.

which is why we put 10% down. ALthough the interest rate on loan #2 is higher.

Hey Jess...
It took us almost 2 years but we were also saving for our wedding which we paid for ourselves...

I had my check directly deposited into our savings, DH paid all the bills and gave me a weekly allowance of $80 - he also paid for gas and gave me extra money when I needed more...we were able to come up with the 10% (we bought a co-op) pay for our entire wedding - then whatever we got back has been paying for the renovations and the mortgage..Good LuckChat Icon

We only put $20000 or 5% down. We did a 85-15-5, DH works in banking and this made the most sense to us. Did not make sense for us to keep renting.

DH took a withdrawal from his 401K and the rest we saved ourselves.

ETS: We also paid for our own wedding.
