Ultrascreen
Hello ladies!
So my doctor wants me to go take a test called an Ultrascreen.
I am just wondering if you need to go take ALL the tests the doctor recommends or if there are some that you don't have to take.
Have any of you taken this one? Have any of you decided to NOT take it? I know it is to see how at risk you are for certain things like Downs Syndrome, but for me it wouldn't matter if I was at high risk.. it woundn't make me do anything differently.
I am just curious to know what others have done! Thanks!

Re: Ultrascreen
I took all tests offered. I guess I just hoped for the best. The Ultrascreen is more exact than the AFP. But the Ultrascreen is a sono too so it's just another chance to see the bean.

Re: Ultrascreen
Hi there,
I posted a similar question a few weeks ago and will try to post the link below.
My doctor told us about all the tests available and told us it was completely up to us whether we wanted to get the test or not - he did not reccommend it or push it at all - just said it was available if we wanted it. I am very on the fence with this as well. Specifically, because of the possibility of false positives. Meaning that, many times when you get a result that indicates there is a higher chance something may be wrong - it is not accurate. Then the next step is either worrying for the next seven months or getting an amnio - which has its risks.
My doctor said what it really comes down to is whether you would get an amnio or not. If you would not consider getting an amnio then there is no reason to get this test because if they find a higher risk - that is the next step. A poster posted on my thread that she would get this test to see if there is something wrong that can be fixed. I asked my doctor and that is not the case - this test would not detect anything that could be fixed - so what it really comes down to is your feelings on this.
I don't know if this helps at all - so I'm sorry, because I am still completely on the fence about this. But, looking forward to hearing from others.
Here is the link to my post - hope it helps

Thanks so much... this definitely helps me realize that I am not the only one who is unsure of all the testing. I can see the point in the glucose tests and things that affect your health and the babies, but it seems to me that all these screening tests do is make you more concerned. Honestly, DH and I are under the philosophy that we take what cards are dealt us. I have made the appointment for the Ultrascreen, but go to the doctor next week and plan on asking her some more informed questions. I may end up cancelling!

Definitely let me know what your doctor says if you don't mind, I would really appreciate it! I stiill haven't made the appointment yet...I guess I should just in case.
I completely agree with you on all counts. From what my doctor implied to me though it is my impression that this test screens - then next step is amnio to confirm or refute and then next step is how you want to handle it. If this is the case, then I really do not think I am going to do the test. Part of me wants to have it just to hear everything is just fine but with the possibility of a false positive, it just doesn't seem worth it. UGH - I wish it was four years ago and the test wasn't even available, lol!

Re: Ultrascreen
the ultra screen involves an ultrasound so you get to see your baby and get some pics too, that's a huge plus!

Re: Ultrascreen
My dr gave us the option of doing the ultrascreen and we decided against doing it. We decided that if the test came back positive, and they wanted us to have an amnio- we wouldnt do it- so it really didnt change anything for us. I would have the baby regardless of what the test says. One of my friends, her sister took the ultrascreen and it came back positive, and she didnt want to have an amnio- and she worried for the rest of her pregnancy. The baby is totally healthy. I wouldnt want to put myself thru that!

Re: Ultrascreen
We did the ultrascreen b/c we--I am in the advanced age category (36). We had our mind set though that if it showed something to be concerned about we weren't going to get the amnio or do anything "about it" but it made us more at ease & like the others said it was more of a chance to see the peanut again.

Re: Ultrascreen
I mentioned on the other thread - it's really important to have the right people in the delivery room with you if anything is wrong.
Plus like others have said - you get to see the baby again! :D

Re: Ultrascreen
that is a test that you can opt out of i think up until a certian age. I did mine at 12 weeks, simply becasue i would rather know than not. Its a personal decision, the bonus is, you get to see the baby
